Just found this forum today.

I moved to the US when I was 13 and now thinking of moving back. I have never worked in the UK and only have a birth certificate.

What would I have to do to enter society there and find work?

You'll first need to get a UK passport if you're entitled to one. The application information is on this site:

After that you can just show up and try to get a job- although you'll need a CV instead of a resume - you can find CV examples online at websites that post jobs for the UK.

Note that some applicants need to register as a British citizen before they can apply for a UK passport:

I would come over for a holiday for a few weeks and see if it suits. It will be quite a jolt I should imagine. Where would you be moving from and are you thinking of moving to?

Go for a vacation.
At least a month - and get about a lot whilst you are there.

Explore the differencies between town and village life - at least by seeing it.
Suggest the YMCA for somewhere to stay, then b&b's.

Keep your eyes open and be critical - objective.
(The US and the UK are incompatible in many ways)

Presumably if you didn't move until you were 13 you would have had a British passport at that time?

If you want to work, you will need a National Insurance number. See here.

It is possible that you came on your parents passport as I did and I was 13 also. I applied from Canada and had no problem getting mine. Downloaded the forms from the web, filled them out sent the required documents, sent them with the required money order in £'s and had my passport withing 3 weeks, which was faster than my husband recieved his and that was a renewall. When I arrived here on September 25th the first thing I did was apply for my NI number. It is possible that you might have been given one when you were born as I was told that it is now given at the time of birth so that your parents received Child Benefits when you were born. They will check this for you, you will have to attend a meeting, where they will ask questions in regards to your wish to stay in UK etc. You might also have to do the Habitual Resident Test, if you have the need for any assistance until you are on your feet. If you do have the to do the test make sure that you have established yourself somewhat, getting a Dr., renting property, applying for jobs etc, joining a church, etc..
It is a difficult road to go down, but not impossible, and the rewards outweight the problems. Stay strong, and good luck.

Get a British passport, to begin with.

If you're a US citizen you also need a US passport, and if you have a green card then you should normally become a US citizen first to keep open your option to return.

Those born in the UK before 1983 do not need to register. (nor do most of those born in the UK in 1983 or later).

I was 3 when i left UK and now early 40's and just moved back..yes, its a bit of a culture shock..ppl are very friendly have been very helpful...the hardest part is work for OH.

I have been here many times so knew what UK was like. but, living here is much more different. do you have family here to help you with the first 6mths...That seems to be the hardest..

Thank you all for your answers. I do have a British Passport, a Green Card and family in Budleigh Salterton and Bristol.

Sounds like I should get my US Citizenship before proceeding.

Child benefits didn't use to be given for the first child.

Yep ..get your usc before you leave the us, as you have been in the us for most of your life and i think it be a wise move....(keep the Gate open) just in case you wanna come back again..

Getting your usc really don't take that long, anything from 3/6 mths but the norm about 4mths..
Oh yep Application fee ;)
