Re: mortgages on return to Uk

Great advice, but that's a comparitively short time compared to what I'm going through -
NSW government job - applied end November, interviewed January, was told I'm through in June....but they don't have an actual position for me as yet and I may have to go through the whole process again as the approval only lasts 12 months! Yes, this is the department which constantly advertises each day in the papers (presumably at huge expense) and has a dire staff shortage!

How are you enjoying being back home by the way?

Hi Pearly

Just came across your post on mortgages and jobs in the UK. I am a nurse and my husband and I returned to Huddersfield in March of this year after 5 years in Australia. I saw that you were hoping to get telephone interviews for posts in the UK. I would recommend that you push for that if you can, because the whole process takes so long here, even when they are desperate for staff. I applied for a job that was advertised on the 8 May and closed on the 2 June. I was interviewed on the 25 June and verbally offered a job on the 30 June. However, with much pushing from me it took until yesterday to get a written job offer. HR said they were having trouble getting references from Australia! This process has taken over 10 weeks so far. I have completed the CRB form which I received yesterday and will hopefully take that to the HR Dept tomorrow, but who knows how long I will have to wait before they allow me to start work.

So if you can get ahead with a job offer whilst in Australia that would be great. We were in a good position, in that we could buy a house on our return, but imagine if we hadn't been in that position. Taking weeks to get an income to pay for rent, food, bills etc.

Hi Ezzie

Thanks for your post.

It has taken some time to settle back in to the UK so far. We were franticly house hunting on our arrival back here and completed on the house in under 6 weeks from stepping foot in the country, which was very good for the UK. I am still getting use to my UK home and actually miss the open plan, single level living of our house in Perth. I am constantly comparing this house to the Perth one and feel that I just need time to re-adjust back to UK living. I believe that I will feel more settled once I start work. I am actually going back to my old PCT, which has combined with another PCT since I left the UK. So I will see some very familiar faces at work.

Talking of job offers though, my Perth job offer went very smoothly really. I was offered a post from the UK on a very relaxed telephone interview. In fact I had the choice of a couple of jobs. I was offered the job in August 2002 and the Dept of Health sponsored me for the 457 visa. We got the visa by the October I think and then in the November decided to sell the house. On the 20 January 2003 we arrived in Perth and on the 3 February I started work.

I really enjoyed my work in Perth and worked in the public women's hospital. I wish I could have brought my work back to the UK with me, but it was a very unique job on a high dependency ward there and you would struggle to find work like that in the UK (pregnant women, new mothers and their babies and gynae and oncology patients).

Does anyone know if you can get a mortgage if you buy an established business in the UK with at least 2 years accounts?

As a going concern you will still probably need a further years books, unless you choose a self certification mortgage, which are still available but in short supply although expect to pay a larger deposit and higher interest rate.

What on earth is a PCT?
I know I'll kick myself when you tell me!

Primary Care Trust. They are generally responsible for GPs in a particular area.
