Default Mortgages and credit rating

We are repatriating to the UK next month after 15 years in Canada. We have sold our home here and want to buy a house back in the UK. However, we will need a mortgage, only about 25% of total cost to do this. Our bank, which we retained, and have had our military pensions paid into for the past couple of decades, will not offer us one because they say we needed to have a UK address for the past 3 years and they can't accept our excellent credit rating from over here! How do others manage to do this? I find it hard to believe that everyone returning to the UK has to rent for 3 years. Any recommendations concerning how to obtain a mortgage in the UK in our circumstances.

You certainly don't need to wait 3 years, but you will generally need to be a UK resident to get a mortgage here. If you search the forum you'll find info on mortgage companies that have been able to help when people have first moved back and don't have a UK credit rating.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Hi, We did not have this problem upon our arrival (we were even offered a mortgage while oversea by Halifax BS) but this was a while ago now, I would get in contact with an independent Mortgage advisor these can help with mortgages from lots of other banks etc and offer best rates etc.
