money matters ?
We are attempting to get to grips with the financial situation in the UK.....in regards to using cash, credit cards and the like ?
Here in NZ we have eft-pos debit cards and wonder is it the same sort of system for purchases in the UK ?....just one of those day to day oddities we are trying to get a handle on before we make the move !
Any info would be greatly appreciated ????

The UK is becoming increasingly cashless. Any new credit/debit card you receive is invariably contactless so just a tap for purchases under £30.

Also, I never had a problem with using my debit card for online purchases.
You can get cash back at supermarkets when using your debit card, both at the checkout and when going through self-serve.
You can pay your utility bills by direct debit or by account - direct debit is usually the cheapest (and easiest). Some older properties still use gas and electric cards - you can top up the cards at many shops but the tariffs are higher.
Tipping at restaurants is appreciated but not expected. If a service charge has already been included in the bill, only tip for exceptional service or if you're feeling extra generous.
Give the pizza delivery person a tip and they'll fall over in surprise, but will be extremely grateful

Re: money matters ?
Pay by phone is rapidly becoming available everywhere credit cards are accepted. I had suggested this several times to my son but he never got around to it. A few days ago his contactless card was rejected and he had to pay cash. When he called the bank they told him that every now and again he has to do a PIN transaction as part of their limitation of damage if his card is ever stolen and he fails to report the theft quickly.
With pay by phone your fingerprint (in his case) is equivalent to entering your PIN and consequently there is no £30 limit. He also hadn’t realized that you don’t even have to unlock your phone or open any app, just simply hold the phone close to the card terminal, and apply your fingerprint.

My bank limits contactless transactions to £30 a there is a day limit before I have to enter a PIN. London buses only accept contactless or oyster card. No cash or credit cards. Also on the buses I think you need a card pet traveler

Paying for large value items using a credit card gives you protection against the shop going bust or a faulty product because the credit card companies have joint liability for the purchase.
e.g. if you pay for a flight with your credit card and the airline folds then you can be reimbursed by the card company.
That doesn't apply to debit cards.
