Hi - I'm leaving in a month....and will have to leave some cash in an account here for rental house and other standing orders like life insurance, HOA, and a credit card bill still paying off.....BUT, how would you suggest transferring money over- should I cash the rest out and transfer it over in a travellers check or wire transfer, or just watch the exchange rate and send it over in small amounts....??

Not sure how to handle it all. My Dad is getting me set up with HSBC to set up a passport account when I get back (no income verification and just 6 pounds a month). My money is with Morgan STanley here....and a credit union.

Any advice appreciated...thanks!

Me and my partner are in the same situation. You have to bear in mind fees. We are going to withdraw all our money and take the chance and carry it on us then exchange it in the UK and immediatly stick it in our UK accounts. The transfer fees are rediculous wiring it to the UK.

The exchange rate is at 0.38p for the doller at the moment.

Its not that much. 3k in UK money is not much to carry between two.

Don't forget you can get a money order from the bank as well but that costs and its annoying trying to get a UK bank to clear it which can take weeks. Best bet is wiring the money into a UK account or gamble on carrying it on you.

What are you talking about the exchange rate from usd to sterling
is 0.66p which is better than it has been for years, plus most
currency exchange companies do not charge any fees.

I've seen XE.com being used by the peeps on here a lot and 80% of the users have been very happy with transfering monies back and forth..

I believe its a bit of a pain to set up and may take a few days but once its up and running its all systems go...

do a quick search of the forum for xe and you should get a lot of hits..

USD? what?

To convert NZD to UK is 38p per NZD. According to the news which I watch daily it claims the xchange rate is at 38p. I have no idea where you get 66p from.

Sorry the original posters location was San Diego and I assumed you were
also in th USA, but even if you are in Nz what are the transfer fees you
are refering to, I am in western australia and have transfered monies to
both the usa and the uk from here with ozforex and paid no fees.

You pauid no fees? can you tell me what bak you are with?

When you transfer money oversees banks charge you a fee, your bank and the bank receiving the money.

Im with Barclays and I was with West Pac. And I get charged for making international transfers.

Think I might see if theres a CBA in NZ.
