Default Lots of people returning now?

Is it just me or does it seem like there's a lot of people returning in 2010?
Things have been pretty quiet here for a while, but in the last week it seems suddenly traffic in this forum has picked up quite a bit.

Guess maybe people have decided this is the year to head back home?

Good luck to everyone who is

Its the sentimentality of Christmas - it always creates a spike in homesickness IMHO.

OR the dust clears and the reality of emptiness in their foreign location becomes obvious once again

Maybe Christmas can create a small spike, but it seems there's a lot of people who have already got plans in place, from well before Christmas.
I know we decided a while ago, it just happens that our plans are to be leaving shortly. Nowt to do with Christmas

'A lot' is a rather relative term. 'A lot' compared to what? There are likley a lot more leaving the UK than returning.

'A lot' compared to 'before', as I explained in my original post

Sure it's not a lot compared to leaving the UK, but that wasn't the point

I think it slows over the holiday here like everywhere else. You get busy it seems no matter where you are.

It was Christmas coupled with pregnancy hormones which have done it for us. We have my husband's family here (he's an Aussie) but I miss my family terribly now we have children. I love living in Oz but without my family to share it with it seems an empty experience.

When we arrived in Oz it was just the two of us, and what we wanted out of life at that stage was quite different. Five years down the track, we have a two yr old, a mortgage, pets, and life seems pretty different. I can't replace my family and the bigger my own family grows the less money we have for trips home. We use Skype but it just isn't enough. I think it will take a while to get home, it's going to cost a bit. I'll be having this baby here but want to get home within the next two years.

Someone was telling me there's a huge rise in emigration to Oz from Ireland at the moment. 25% increase was said.

I would like to see a running poll on returnees with stats such as..from where and what part of UK returning to , after how long and why.

We had a poll before but it was unfortunately ruined by an option of "staying and like it" which eliminated the point of it

It seems like every week new ones come on with the decision

I think that the holidays at home give people more time to get on the site, read and share their information..and as well a lot have just joined which is great instead of just reading..

many new ones on the over 50 thread also going back

I think that with the recession hitting North America, that people who were cruising along making good money have been hit harder than they thought they would be and with the support of close family and friends not there, have decided that family is more important than mountains, oil rich provences, large houses with more square footage than a family of 5 could ever use, the national sport of lawn cutting in North America and of course the inevatable 3 car garage, 1 with a car, 2 with shit you have collected in the past 5 years. We have all taken the trip, bought the t-shirt, taken the pictures and now its time to go "home"

Brit in FL is an unknown quantity at this point
Default Re: Lots of people returning now?

I would like to hear from anyone who has moved back to the UK - did you miss the US? Is the grass really greener?

I moved to Florida a couple of years ago with my "then" husband. We split just over a year ago. Anyway, I've been feeling pretty homesick (even though I have made an excellent circle of friends etc.) and my recent trip back made me realise the extent of which I was missing it - even the rain and cold!!!

I pretty much sold up everything in the UK and invested in a house and business over here - and with the housing market how it is, it would take alot longer to sell and even then, not at the price I paid, and with the conversion to Sterling, it seems like a gloomy picture...

However, I know the saying that the "grass is always greener" holds true and would like to hear any stories from those who've made the move back!

Thanks.

Thanks.
You probably won't find too many people who have moved back from the US posting here - most forget about BE once they have settled. However, there are plenty of Americans posting about their experiences of life in the UK at uk-yankee.
