Default Need advice

Hi
After what seems like a lifetime of back and forth I have decided to settle in England with my kids and I wanted some advice as to which areas in SE England, preferably around London area, are reasonably priced to live, I am more focused on good school districts for the kids as they are grown up and London is not right for them. I am so frazzled as what to do, we can live in London for a small while like always but they will need to start school and settle or I will have to keep with the home schooling and tutors which will be hard because I hope to find a job. Thank you

Hi, welcome to BE.

What do you count as 'reasonably priced'? One person's reasonably priced is another's very expensive! Do you want any particular type of schooling i.e. grammar schools?

Will you need to commute in to London?

Few places around London with good schools are reasonably priced although that does depend on your definition of 'reasonably'. You say your children are 'grown up'; how old are they? Do you all hold British passports? What about their other parent?

The impression that I have is this - Property in all of the area around London is very expensive. I live far away from that region so have no recent first-hand knowledge. Head for one of the provincial towns - the further from London the better !

Hi they were born in England, sorry when I said around London I meant say around an hour by train, we would love the countryside as we all love walking and nature, eldest is about to start GCSEs, my primary concern to finding a lace is good schools a very close second is costs, I will be the sole earner so reasonably means that really, preferably cheap, but like I said good schools are very important. Thanks

Good schools, an hour from London, and cheap don't really all go together! Sounds like where I live (apart from the cheap part), I'm in Berkshire, Wokingham area which is renowned for it's excellent schools.

Can you give us a rough monthly budget for rental and what you'd want for it?

I suppose i'm a little biased towards the Suffolk area as that's where i lived before moving across the 'pond' 15 years ago. Ipswich, 60 miles north east and one hour by train to London. Lovely countryside, decent schools. My family are all still in the area and my niece has 2 children, one that boards at Culford school in Bury St Edmunds and the other that has just left Ipswich school.

Hi I looked at Culford school, it looks great but it's a private school, I was thinking more of state schools. Thank you.

Plenty of other good schools in the Ipswich Suffolk area an hour away from London. From memory Northgate school, St albans, Ipswich school, St Josephs were all considered decent a few years back. Good luck.

It is really hard to say without knowing what your actual budget is as what is cheap to one person is mad to another. For example, I was horrified to pay £1500 a month when we lived in the south east. While my brother in law says he has a great deal but paying several times that

Wokingham itself has a station but it’s a slow train in to London, although handy for Gatwick etc. A better bet is the fast train line - Twyford is 25-30 mins in to central London. And Crossrail is coming soon too. All of the schools around here are either good or excellent, it’ll depend on what you want really - primary, secondary, single sex, mixed, sporty or more academic etc?

Sorry, I’ve no idea about Asian grocery stores - maybe in central Reading?

Edit: I’ve just seen your previous post stating that your salary will be £40k for both is you, approx £20k each? So I think your take home monthly estimate is too high. Will your salary be the same no matter where in the UK you go? If so, I’d forget the south east personally, and go somewhere with cheaper housing costs.

You still haven't answered the question about the other parent, are they moving with you?

above is total salalry for me and wife, and this estimate I got from my friend ,in there hospital people recently join with same band which I am expecting band. And he told they get 1750 per month including weekend ends and night shift duty and 1750 is all inclusive with tax.

And sorry its not 20,000.

I would not want to be anywhere near London, or even the south east on that income.
