Re: Let's compare foods
No worries 3 go mad.
We also used to like Cafe Va Bene at the corner of NE Rd in Campbeltown for pizza and pasta. I mostly think Aus food is okay, though I miss Minstrels a lot as well. But the supermarkets themselves, well they are what I would imagine Eastern European supermarkets would be like, esp if you go after 3 on a Saturday when you would think that they had brought back rationing. Is it just me or a Cheesels and Twisties totally minging? Could never understand why Aussies like them so much... |

Why thank you, I rather like yours too actually (but then I am a shoe girl!). Yes, you're right, Adelaide is 'margerine' - if you meant, bland, tasteless and artificial:p
Where abouts are you? (for the time being). |
Re: Let's compare foods
Since coming back I am sooooooo impressed with the range of indiviual meals in Tesco and how much they have improved things since i left.
I adore their finest range! Although i am staying with my daughters family, I often dont fancy what they are having. I just love all the new food options i have available to me. Excellent quality too. Not the old style stodgy microwave meals of the past, but much of it fresh ingredients. Theres even a range that puts a whole meal together in the chilled cabinet and you just cook it for one person which is perfect for me. Some may say it is expensive, but not really if you take into consideration that you are not buying indiviual ingredients and wasting most of it because you are on your own. Here is a list of my dinners last week... Morrocan meatballs with couscous yoghurt dressing and fresh coriander (bloody yummo!!!) Paella with prawns chorizo chicken Fish pie with prawns and salmon.. Lamb shanks with roasted root vegetables There was nothing like the quality of these products in Australia. I wouldnt dream of buying a ready meal down there!! YUK  We did most of our cooking from scratch just to have decent dinners, but for us it was not cost effective. Being just two of us, many leftovers went in the bin ingredients went off and the time involved was hard with both of us working. Thumbs up for UK supermarkets from me  |
Re: Let's compare foods

Ready meals
UK: Most supermarkets stock a vast range of high quality ready meals, often as good as meals you would get in restaurants, and they include indian and chinese, as well as very good English meals and lots of exotic meals from all over the world. You can get just one part of a meal (like potatoes cooked various ways) or a full banquet, and anything in between. In addition to these most UK supermarkets have a very good range of ready made sandwiches, with many delicious fillings, all high quality and fresh on many different types of bread. Makes a quick, healthy, inexpensive lunch or snack. AUSTRALIA: Usually the only ready meals you can get are frozen ones, which usually taste the same as each other regardless what the meal is supposed to be. Tiny little portions too at outrageous high prices. Good luck finding sandwiches anywhere here unless you make them yourself, or pay through the nose at somewhere like Subway (where you still won't find anything like the range available at Asda or Tesco)! makes me glad im not in britain...thanks for that as i was feeling a bit homesick  ps.... I made my own meals did not buy frozen shit btw.as good as any restaurant LMAO... maybe thats why i make it work in Nz or anywhere |
Re: Let's compare foods
I assume you're joking about being glad you're not in UK, but as for the bit about ready meals, in case you were genuinely unaware, I was not talking about frozen shit, I was talking about the outstanding quality freshly prepared (not frozen) indian, chinese and various other types of ready meals you can get in Asda and Tesco these days.
They are NOTHING like the frozen shit you can get in Australian supermarkets, whatsoever, and you certainly wouldn't microwave them either! All I can say other than that, is that they actually are as good as eating out in a nice restaurant, but if anyone refuses to believe that, it's fine by me! I know because I have tasted them! |

Actually, against my husbands advice, I bought a chinese meal there once....NEVER AGAIN!! On a free day, why dont you pop down to the Wanganui bridge, turn left along Aramaho. Somewhere near where the ostriches hang out theres an Ok tree with a chiselled out cave inside the trunk. Go sit in there like a troll, light a fire, and watch the paddle steamer sail by. We'll all be happy then.......... hopefully you'll set light to the tree whilst you're in there.:p |
