Good afternoon: Not everyone:D ...just out of interest...how many people who have posted on this thread have lived and worked on the IOW...a very different experience from a sunny holiday IMHO.... but different strokes for different folks...perhaps being 'foreign' i.e. Canadian on the IOW didn't help my cause...that being said my nationality hasn't been a problem anywhere else in the UK:confused:

Why would being Canadian be a problem? There is a childrens camp at Wooton Bridge where Canadians were billeted during WW2. It later became a Pontins holiday camp and is now a childrens adventure camp.

Yep you are right, same to be said for anywhere, maybe even Oz when contemplating living there eh? :sneaky:

Good morning: It was the fact I was 'foreign' and a 'grockle' (mainlander). My sixth formers were great and very welcoming...in fact most were planning their own escape from the Island i.e. university and were keenly interested in the world beyond the ferry ports. As said previously, my nationality hasn't been an issue anywhere else in England, Wales, Scotland, N. Ireland or the ROI so was very surprised by my reception on the IOW.
Go figure!

Good morning: As I've said...the IOW in my experience is not particularly welcoming to foreigners/mainlanders (grockles) who choose to live and work there...for holiday makers it is usually (not always) a different story..maybe a couple of decades residency on the IOW makes a difference:D ..anyway we do like to live beside the seaside and are much happier where we are now. Best of luck to the OP.

You have obviously never lived in Norfolk, the local in my mums village has a sign that says, "No coaches, caravans, Eastern Europeans or sightseers."

Anyone lived there or know it fairly well?

We have just got a slight glimmer of hope. OH saw a job in forensics at the jail there. Emailed them and just had a reply. It is only a 9mth contract to start with but according to the guy who emailed it would be permanent after that.
Not sure we would want to stay there long term, but i am sure we could cope for 9mths to get our feet back in blighty.

Basically want to know if it is a crap hole or somewhere we could happily live for a while?

I reckon for the sake of 9mnths and a "foot in the door back to the UK," I would say go for it - if you are sure Blighty's for you:)
After all, a ferry to the UK is nothing if you go stir crazy of a weekend and 9months you can get into "tourist" mode so it doesnt seem so final.
Any more news/decision on the job?

Good luck Flea - I really hope this comes off for you.

Worse case scenario is that you won't like it when you get there. But at least you will be closer to your family and closer to your planned move back home. And it's another place that you will have lived in and experienced.

And there shouldn't be any Aussie men there

More than likely though you'll enjoy your time there - you sound like a really positive person who makes the best of things so no doubt you'll be straight in there making friends and exploring your new temporary home.

Then after no time at all, you'll be able to choose where you want to live.

The holiday camp I mentioned now has security on the gates as it is a childrens adventure camp. We went to visit a few years back (worked there when it was a holiday camp) and the guy on the gate wouldn't let us in as we didn't have clearance. He was proud to say that he had even turned a Canadian away who was billeted there during the war and wanted to look around for old times sake and memories. Can you believe that! The guy had made a special trip and the jobs worth at the gate wouldn't let him in - even with an escort! We are talking about a guy in his 70's with his wife, hardly a danger.

Sorry about your experience, hope you made some good friends there and it didn't put you off the island, it really is a beautiful place and the majority of the islanders are very friendly.

Good morning: I've never lived in Norfolk but did we did spend a holiday there in November and had a great time...a lovely county to which we have seriously considered moving if we don't go to Canada:thumbup: Didn't see any exclusionary signs during our stay so couldn't comment.

I agree, nice county, lovely scenery, but the people are odd.

Enjoy.
