So does anyone else start singing Come on Irene in their head every time they read the title of this thread?

The best scenario would be for Irene to head east out to sea...but all the weather guys say that's not going to happen.

I've been singing that song to myself all day.

Seems to have missed us, in South Florida. Batten down the hatches, in the Carolina's & all the way North.

Stay safe & be prepared. Personally i'm a city kid & have no idea or experience, in these matters.:eek:

Ps. Have a load of bottled water, soups & batteries, going cheap.

Just on TV now that it's projected to be more over NJ than coastal NY. That's bad news for us...the further west it moves the nearer the eye will be to where I live.

As I alluded to earlier, it's actually better to be exactly in the eye than to one side of it. That at least gives you some respite for a while as the storm passes. Additionally, if you look at rainfall patterns, you'll see that it's far heavier to the west of the eye rather than the actual path of the eye. I don't know whether that westward bias is true of all hurricanes, but it's certainly the case for North American ones.

And ice. With so many above-ground power cables, such a hurricane will inevitably cause significant power outages that will take time to restore.

First it's blood freezing blizzards, then it's blood boiling searing heatwaves, then it's scary earthquakes and now it's Irene roaring in ferociously like a woman scorned seeking revenge.

Maybe it's a blessing I never actually got to live in America - it's sounds too dangerous a place in which to hang out. The thin drizzle I can see wafting down outside from the heavy grey/white cloud sheet way up there above London Town sounds a much safer bet, if a rather tame and boring one.

When America has weather then it really is weather, no half measures, in typical American style.

Maybe if you sang to Irene she would turn around and go away like a good little girl......no harm done....hopefully.

We're up in NW NJ with a ton of trees around us.....just hoping for the best. Moving the patio furniture off the deck, or maybe I should leave it there so that if flies off and hits the next door neighbour who threw her cat out in the freezing weather.
Didn't feel the earthquake the other day so just hoping we miss this. Sent hubs to Home Depot this morning, but I'm sure everything is sold out.
Hopefully, it will sweep my Mother in law away:D

We have lots of trees around the house too that are a concern. One is a huge fir tree...it must be well over 100 ft high...it's about 30 ft from the house. There are also 3 large trees near our bedroom...hubby suspects one is rotten although the tree guy for the council says it's fine and we can't remove it. Trees here seem to have such shallow roots...they fall over like matchsticks.

I know what you mean -- we are deep in the woods, and every time there's any kind of rainstorm we hear crashes all around us. The worst thing for me about a storm is that I'm terrified that if I let the dogs out something will come down on them. Of course, the workmen just finished the repairs from the Jan/Feb snow damage two days ago. The roof was replaced in May, so we'll see how it holds up now.

A friend of mine posted on Facebook that her son's piano teacher must have a sense of humour, as his piece to learn for this week is "Good Night Irene."
