How to move valuables (jewellery etc) back to UK
 

I have some South African Krugerrands and King Edward sovereigns left to me by my father back in 2000.

I brought them over here to USA stuffed in my handbag and didn't think twice about it. Now I'm likely going to do the same on the way back to UK, but I'm wondering, what if they were to set off the metal detector thing at the airport how would I prove that these were part of my dad's estate 14 years ago? I know in the past I've had my hand luggage "beep" due to having a cigarette lighter in my handbag, which they then took off me.

I could get copies of his Will but it doesn't specifically mention the coins being left to me. I don't want them confiscated at the airport, but also don't want to put the valuables into the cargo with the furniture that we're going to ship across.

Any ideas on this, I think the total value in gold would be over $10k.

Do you currently have them listed in your insurance policy? If so, I would scan a copy of that document to your phone or carry a hard copy with you. That will give customs something to go on. Do you have any other paperwork for them? If not, I wouldn't worry too much. When I moved back, I carried all my valuables (jewellery, camera equipment etc) with me and nobody blinked an eye.

I'm not sure if they are on the policy now you mention it, I'll have to take a look. If not, it looks like I'll be adding them onto it anytime soon :)

God, there's so much to think about with moving back. I'm damn sure I didn't go through this much malarky when coming here:eek:

Ain't that the truth. I packed a couple of suitcases and hopped on a plane. Moving back was a completely different story. Sorting, donating, selling, scanning photos/docs, organizing finances, insurance etc etc. Make sure you have a comfy bed at this end. You will need it:lol:

Were you planning to declare them?
I just had a quick look at HMRC and one is required to declare cash over 10,000 Euro.

I'm not sure though, how your investment coins would be treated.
I would be inclined to get in touch and ask HMRC http://search2.hmrc.gov.uk/kbroker/h...0&raction=view
It would be dreadful if they were confiscated when all you actually had to do was declare them in the first place. I don't know of course, that's why I'd ask them!:)

This is interesting!
I had been using terms like "gold coins" and "investment gold" in the HMRC search box but the information there seemed only to apply to traders dealing in investment gold coins. Then I tried "krugerrands" and I got this

That's what I am realizing, too. The big one for me is scanning all the tax returns, car insurance documents and anything else I need to keep. I think I need to start now and do it gradually.

Well, no I wasn't planning to declare them really but then I wasn't sure what to do at all to be honest. It wasn't a big deal when I brought them into USA as I said, they were just in my handbag and they went through the proper scanning devices at Manchester airport, no questions asked.

My husband has gone to google various sites now to see what he can find out about it, hopefully he'll come up with some info or failing that perhaps the shipping company we're going to use may know something.
