As someone who is not employed, doesn't have a checkable background and the like after being away for years, then how do you sort out the following:

Telephone - landline
Telephone - mobile
Broadband internet
Television - what options (I hear about Freeview and Sky)
Water
Gas
Electric

Any other "stuff" which is easy for residents but which they probably want to make difficult for people like me.

Please add information on nay other services you can think of.

I've just moved back, and in a (probably) similar situation to yours,

So far I havent had any problem setting anything up. We opened a bank account first, and even though our balance was ZERO, vodafone was very happy to set me up with a pay monthly phone, without putting a deposit down.

I did a package of tv, phone and broadband (although still waiting for the broadband) through sky, again no checks no deposit.

I think your biggest problem may be setting up a bank account, but maybe someone else on here might be able to help you. Just be prepared to maybe shell out some cash on deposits for services.

The OP should search this forum for 'UK Bank Accounts'...there's been several threads on this subject.

I recently bought a house in the UK and didn't have a problem getting utilities connected...although I already had an active UK bank account.

I have an account at a UK building society so I can start with that. I no longer have a credit record so any potential credit checks will come back as non existant.

I remember getting my first mobile years ago an havng to put down about £150 deposit to Orange (about 13 years ago) and the same with BT for a landline. Got both back about 12/18 months later. Don't really want '000's tied up in deposits as cash will be at a premium.

We too had kept a building society account open whilst in Canada; they issued credits cards immediately upon our return. Just phoned them up, explained the situation, and that was that.
Good luck on your move
