Re: Hello everyone - thinking about going back to UK
Quite a few racists? Luckily you dont get those in Germany. I havent once read anything approaching the attirude you mention. Being positive about the UK or the NHS is not actually a bad thing. It does seem as though you want people to agree with you to reinforce the fact that you want to stay where you are.
I don't live in Germany, I live in Belgium on the border.
I asked for feedback from people who had moved back to the UK after a long time. I wanted honest feedback, not just people saying it's better than in the US, because I am not in the US.
I can't believe how people here have ignored what I told about my Dad. I mean, I didn't expect you to start crying, but come on.... a basic human response would be to say that it's sad, or something...

You know, you are one tough lady, my DAD DIED IN A SORT OF CUPBOARD NEXT TO THE BINS because the NHS hospital couldn't find him a proper room. He had leukaemia and died two and a half weeks after the diagnosis.
... no all you say is that this will colour my view.
good grief. I don't think this forum is for me.
I prefer to communicate with people who feel, not machines.

My FIL died some years ago of cancer and the treatment he received was excellent.

Sense prevailed in the end but there were quite a few people on this forum who thought it was just fine for the teacher to ridicule a child for dressing up as Santa because the child was black and Santa is supposedly white.
I'm white myself but am against all prejudice and was disappointed to read so many supporters of the teacher's attitude.

This thread really has made me see how callous people here are too though, you are the only person to have said it was awful. Ok, you didn't see it, and are hearing it from a stranger on a forum, but still, I don't understand how everyone else could ignore what I wrote. I am honestly shocked.

"You don't get them in Germany" ... well actually, I've worked in Germany for over 15 years and haven't seen any. I dare say there are some though, or are you referring to a war that finished long before either of us were born?

I have given you feedback twice and I have never lived in the US

I'm happy to hear your FIL had excellent treatment. My Gran did too back when I was little. But clearly, my Dad didn't. I am possibly traumatised by that, and the result is fear of the NHS. This thread has actually made me realise that is a possibility.

Havent seen a racist in Germany in 15, wow. True story I was in Germany in Hamm last weekend, 2 of the people I had to suffer on one of the nights were right wing extremists, common unfortunately in Germany. Why on earth would I be referring to the war?

I am not in love with Germany at all, I've got no German family or anything, and sometimes they annoy me like hell, but their medical care has been great during the time I have been working there.
I don't see why we are even slagging off or defending Germany. I started this thread asking about the NHS, specifically people who have lived in countries with good medical care and what it was like returning to the Uk and putting up with the NHS waiting lists and all that.

Why do you assume people ignored what you wrote, not commenting on a traumatic experience is different to ignoring it. Most of the people who contribute on this part of the forum are lovely caring people always willing to help. Your 'problem' is that quite quickly you came across as someone who wanted us to confirm your fears. That hasnt happened and in fact most people have said how good the NHS is. If that isnt what you wanted to read Im not sure any of us can help really.
I am not in the mood for an argument with anyone, so thanks all. Over and out.

I can understand why you have concerns about the NHS and there are certainly horror stories about our system - but they exist in all systems, even the US, which considers itself as having the best health care system in the world.
Sorry for bringing up the US again.

I probably haven't mixed in the right circles or I don't know what, but I honestly haven't met racists - or at least knew that they were racists, obviously they don't go around in special outfits these days.

Maybe the OP is still lurking so I would like to start by saying how sorry I am that your father died in such bad circumstances. That was tragic!
There will always be horrendous stories relating to healthcare from wherever we are living. There will also be good and positive stories. Here in The Bahamas, many of us pay for health insurance which costs a fortune but it does mean instant access to specialists and treatment. Even so, I have friends who have not been impressed with the treatment they were given. On the other hand, many who get treatment form the public hospital get good treatment.
This is one reason I am reluctant to return to the Uk as I know it is unlikely that I would be able to access specialists quickly or even maybe get an immediate appointment with my GP. Having said that though, we have friends who live in the London area and are totally happy with the treatment they have received under the NHS.
There is good and bad everywhere in the world.
On a last note, I have to say the members of BE are the kindest and friendliest people I know on similar forums. Never seen any signs of racism.
