Default Healthcare in the UK for expats.

It has been a difficult year as my father has been very ill and is now dying. We are thinking of buying his house and spending up to three months in the UK per year. We were both born, raised and trained in Scotland. We moved to Canada for five years, returned to Scotland for five years and went back to Canada in '99.

Does anyone know where we stand re-health care in the UK?

Thanks

You are meant to be ordinarily resident so wouldn't strictly be entitled to NHS treatment. Though whether they would question this if you are still registered with a GP is another matter.

Based on your post it seems to me you would need to buy health care coverage for the duration of your visit home.
You wouldnt be entitled to free care on the NHS due to a host of reasons.
If you check out UK Department of Health Website all the rules are there. The problem is you are Non Resident and even although you may have retained your UK citizenship and Right of Abode, you dont actually live in the UK nor pay taxes.Good luck anyway

Maybe each time you buy your plane tickets to visit, you could buy some travel insurance that covers medical, then you will have access to care while in UK.
Our US insurance told us that we are covered World wide for medical, maybe the cover you have does the same.

Hi, you may be able to register as a "temporary resident" for up to 3 months. It is worth speaking to the local surgery and the primary care provider. I did and they both said there would be no problem.

Check with your health care provider in Canada to see what will be covered during your visit to the UK.

There is quite a thing now about medical treatment especially for tourists, which in the end you are if you have been out of the UK for any time. It would be better to have insurance than get stung for a big bill, after the event. With shortage of funds in health departments I think you will find more chasing for bills if they think you are not entitled
