Here's what I would do if your little un's legs could take it.. From Marble
Arch walk down through Hyde park, past the palace onto the houses of
Parliament, over Westminster bridge and from there you can walk all along
the Embankment. There you'll see the London eye, the replica of the Golden
Hind, the Tate modern, HMS Belfast and tower bridge, then you can double
back and go over the new pedestrian bridge to St Paul's and the Monument.
You'll see a lot of free sights and one things for sure you'll definitely
sleep the night before your interview after all that walking...good luck!

Hey thanks, Sean.

Can't believe all the great info you've all given me. You've planned the day
for me - all I need to do is print out the underground map

Thanks again

Is anyone else here going to be in London on the 31st for medical/interview? I
have to go the night before - travelling from darkest Cumbria with two young
children. I've found a really cheap hotel at Marble Arch (about halfway between
the doctor's and the embassy). If it turns out to be OK I can post details of
it for anyone who needs them. They quoted me £45 for a three-bed room and
continental breakfast which is a lot less than I expected to pay (tried youth
hostels but they said no because of having the children with me).

Hoping I get the chance to show the girls a few sights the day before, or maybe
after the embassy if I'm one of the lucky ones to get finished sharpish. Seems
a shame if on their only trip to the Capital before leaving the country they
don't at least get a glimpse of the outside of Buck Palace. Madly trying to
think of things to see/do that are cheap or free and fairly central.

Stupidly nervous about the medical. Did a google search and read lots of
helpful posts about how easy it is but still... I'm a bit pathetic about
doctors. If anyone who's recently been to the London medical wouldn't mind
exchanging a couple of mails about it I'd be grateful.

Can't give any info on the medical haven't got that far yet, (I'M from London now in the USA doing the process). When you get to London get a travel pass of some sort for you and the kids you can hop on and off the buses/tube for one price. Take them to Hamleys toy store in Regent Street (They'll never forget the biggest toy store in world, I didn't) Go to Leciester Square and Trafalger Square (Get attacked by pigeons!!) See Big Ben etc.
The little Guys will never forget a trip to London wahtever you manage. Do go upstairs on a Bid Red Bus My American Boyfriend was like a 2 year old up there.
Good luck with the medical etc. Have fun that's what it's all about.

I agree about the London eye and I was going to suggest one of the
open top bus tours but that's not cheap either. As for Pudding Lane,
just look for the tube station "Monument" It is named after the
monument to the great fire of London and is very close to Pudding Lane
where the monument is.

Try the 11/211 route - it used to be advertised by London Transport as
having the same route as the special tourist companies.

Since it's gonna be a British physician, in your case I
would go for Mr. Blair on an appropriate spot)

Try www.uglies.com for something appropriate -
they don't have Union
Jack ones though, they said it was because they could never forgive us
for the Spice Girls.

Remember not to stress too much about it, as long as you have all the
required documentation it is a breeze. You'll get your visa exactly
one year after I got mine!

Enjoy your visit to London.

Agreed with denis, don't stress out, i was a wreck for 3 or 4 days before the trip. It was a long day, i caught a bus at 1am from south wales. Just make sure you check and double check your paperwork, and they seem impressed if you have things in order, the less time you spend with them, them more people they can see.

As for things to do, make sure you take your walking shoes. If you buy a travel pass for the day you should't need to spend anymore money, most of the things worth seeing you don't need to pay for (parliment, big ben, etc etc). I was planning on celebrating on the london eye, but instead i spent 2 hours in an internet cafe mailing my wife about my day.

Good luck !
