We are very unhappy here but don't want the family to split up it really is eating away at us
Oh I see it's the older Two, yes a big problem indeed for you, wishing you all the best.

It must be difficult for you and your wife to move back because
of the kids. Please don't disappear and lose yourself inside the
depression. I hope you could get treatment for the depression.

You have come a long way and do carry the hope that you will
get better.All the best.

I pretty much frogmarched my best mate to her doctors a couple of months ago - we made a double appointment (not for the two of us, but so she had time to sit there and talk!) and we both wrote lists of her symptoms and problems. The doctor was good, gave lots of info alot like the very first entry on this thread, and took blood tests to try and measure various levels of chemicals.

My friend has already been on her low dose of happy tablets for several years now, since the extremely premature birth of her son which I think triggered some already somewhat dormant feelings. She continues to take these.

I feel bad now - because I have now emigrated and am limited to phone and skype 'help'. Her doctor stated all her blood tests came back as 'normal' - I am gobsmacked - in the nicest possible way, she is not normal !

I am interested in the 'monthly' problems mentioned earlier also - she is definitely horrendously worse on a monthly basis. She loses all sense of reason and rationality and whilst we can joke about things and I can mostly 'lift' her, albeit very temporarily, we have both discussed her rather scary 'stop the world, I want to get off' moments, which are now more frequent. This is way more than a touch of PMT.

She (we) has hit a brick wall with her doctor - I guess she might go back on her own but she doesn't know what else to ask for. He's sympathetic but not constructive with any other avenues open to her.

She done the SJW, fish oils, hynotherapy, you name it - she's tried it. She's a smart, funny, attractive lady who will be 40 next year, she's a great mum, yet cannot see this for love nor money and continually beats herself up.
Just how many times can I try and convince her of this? - I am an exasperated bystander, christ knows how she must feel - and I thank a lot of you for opening up as you give me a better insight.

Exercise was mentioned - a lot - and can any of you advise me if this has become and tried and tested method for you?

Sorry - bit of a ramble - just hoping someone can prompt me and therefore her into another direction - she is pretty much anti drugs and only takes her currently ones under protest ! They help, but not enough.

Hi Ann,
At work in the morning the Rec. therapist does stretching exercise
and walks with the patients to promote circulation and boost the
mood. I do see benefits in exercise because of it's popularity with
our patients or it is because we are in the West Coast and like
outdoors activities rain or shine.

Omega 3 fish oil are used for mood disorder patients in conjunction
with anti depressants. Groups like mindfulness meditation group
and psycho educational group are being offered to them.
For some with resistive depression,as the last resort , ECT is provided
to ease lift the mood and break through intrusive negative thoughts.

I hope your friend's GP will refer her to a psychiatrist that is
specialised in Pre and Postpartum Depression. If she wants a wholistic treatment ,the London Homeopathic Hospital has a mood disorder clinic. http://www.uclh.nhs.uk/GPs+healthcar...sorder+Clinic/
If I were to visit UK, I would love to visit the clinic and find out more
about their programs .
Hope that helps.

For the very fact you have mentioned this I believe CBT would be a good way for her to go. Certainly wouldnt hurt to try

Just went to the doctors and they put me on 2 medications,I guess one of them for a week or so and the other perhaps a bit longer, also the doc said it's best to get some councelling so she gave me a number and I just called to get an appointment.
I just could not hack it any longer and was starting to think bad stuff

At least you had to courage to go to the doctor's office...that's more than I could have done. Good luck with the meds and don't fogot there is usually someone around on here if you feel the need for a chat or to vent.

I hope you start to feel more like your old self soon.

Best thing you could have done going to the doctor and appointment with counsellor, its not an overnight process but its far better than sitting around doing nothing and getting worse.

I am a few months down your path and feel a lot better than I did, not fantastic as I know it takes time but I am discovering things about myself from the past that didn't think had any relevance to the present but do.

So stay with it PSB, give yourself some time to heal inside as well as outside, let the professionals give you a hand.

psb,I like to commend you for the courage to get professional help.
In my situation, I thought I have already dealt with my parents and sister's
deaths, the 3 of them all died suddenly from strokes .Parents died 6 months
apart when I was 6 yrs. old and sis. died when I was in my mid twenties .
I was a newly qualified RMN,ready to emigrate to Canada.

Since I am working in psych,I thought everything was under control
until I started having problems with high BP and high cortisol
level.Started to make life changes or face medical complications.
I already knew that the BP problem was due to the traumas in my life
and a symptom of depression .

Invested alot of my time on retreats, seminars, group counsellings
here and in the States. It was fun as well as alot of work being put in to
confronting the personal issues.
The work is not finished yet, learning new things about myself and others are on going all the time.
Like what Plants had said that it is not a quick get well
thing , it takes time ,don't be too hard on yourself if you discovered
or confronted with your not too pleasant character.
My advice is be kind, loving ,compassionate and able to laugh at
yourself .Hope that helps.
