But not one that will prove he's a UK national at an airline check-in desk, Immigration official, landlord for a UK right to rent check, etc.

Correct, but that's not what you said.

Half right - half lacking intelligence.

Would a birth certificate not be good enough to prove British citizenship?
I think your expired British passport might be more acceptable to the airline who have to certify that you have the right to enter the UK. I’m sure their staff will have no idea what a genuine British birth certificate looks like. If you make it onto the flight and get to the UK then your expired passport plus birth certificate should be enough to convince border control you have the right to enter.

That makes sense, but it'd be worth getting confirmation from the airline, in writing if possible, because if the check-in desk disagrees - even if they're wrong to do so - you're stuck. Should be OK at UK Immigration.

Why don’t you just get a British passport?

If you have a valid Australian passport and an expired British passport then you shouldn’t have any difficulties travelling to the UK or passing a ‘Right to Work’ or ‘Right to Rent’ check providing your appearance hasn’t drastically changed.

Thats what I was thinking, we've had plenty of other posters in that situation who have returned home with no issues.
