Default Getting straight to 6th form

My little sister Lilly is 17. She's due to finish at her NZ high school in November, however she wants to go back to England. She was 9 when she came to NZ and is going to be 18 in November. Would it be possible for her to attend her final year of 6th form in England and get full A levels if she moved in June/July this year? Then she could do upper sixth and finish in June 2012 like her peers. She would be living with our aunt in Hertfordshire, as she is too young to live on her own and our parents aren't keen on her moving. NCEA is not recognised in England though, and it would be good for her to make friends and experience school life. Any experiences, knowledge or ideas about moving back for upper 6th?

Hi,

What year is your sister in? Level 1 NCEA is below year 11 GCSE in the UK. So therefore if she is in year 12 it would count as her having done her GCSE's.
A school will not take her part way through the curriculum. A'levels are a two year course and she will be too old for school.

Therefore she should look for a sixth form college near by or a college where she can study her A'levels.

Hope that helps.

Carole

She is in year 13 and has done level 2. Thanks so much, I'll talk to her about 6th form colleges instead of high school

Also, if by July she has managed to get the required 80 points to pass level 3 she can apply to the NCEA people for her certificate she will then have finished her schooling. If she has passed them at merit or excellence they are equivalent to A'levels at A-C level in the UK.

I didn't know that. Thank you. This helps, though I am not sure it is likely to happen due to her taking all the academic subjects! They are mostly externally based. It's good to know though.

Thanks,

Millie
