Default Getting Married in the UK....

Hi there,

Both myself and my fiancee have been living in Australia permanently for the last 3 years. We are both full British Citizens. He is dual with an Australian Citizenship and I am currently an Australian permanent resident.

We plan to get married in the UK in 2022 (possibly April). We have been told lots of different information regarding how we go about this - has anyone done this or had experience with it?

We have been told we have to go back and register our intent to marry in person and then get married within 12 months from that date. We want to avoid going back twice (for this and then for the wedding) and also with the current pandemic don't even know if that will be possible.

Any advice or experience is appreciated!

Thanks
Megan

I think that is correct information for England and Wales. I have a friend here in Canada who wanted to get married in the UK at the end of June this year. The choices were to either do two trips or to enter the UK three weeks before the date. The latter wasn’t practical for them so they flew back in November to do the necessary. However the pandemic has meant that the wedding was cancelled anyway, so they have to repeat the process this year unfortunately as they’re loath to make arrangements within the 12 month period.

There was a similar thread on this a few weeks ago and it seemed like the rules in Scotland are not as stringent.
