There is the possibility that they will be released sooner than the estimated time and I want to get her back as soon as I can. Sometimes its worth paying more for convenience in my opinion so I wouldnt think about the cost but what is going to work best for you and your cat.
Is it possible to take pets in the cabin with you? I know this used to be possible on some flights.

I believe that KLM allow it for small animals but the cage needs to fit under the seat in front of you.

That's correct. There are some very well designed carriers available for just that purpose.

...only into mainland europe though; if you're flying into the UK DEFRA insists you use cargo.

Might be a good reason to fly from the USA to Paris and then on to London then. At least my little 7 lb Maltese could then travel in the cabin with me from the USA to Paris and from Paris to London in the cargo hold. Unfortunately, my 15 lb dog is too big to fly in the cabin

If both my dogs have to go in the cargo hold, I will have to be sedated because I would be SO worried about them for the entire flight!

.... or you could rail and tunnel taxi/ferry into the UK. After much research I chose this:

I know Days Inn hotels accepts pets - I wonder if there is one at Heathrow?

Just flew in with my dog and it took 1 hour at ARC to get him.
