Thanks for that great thread. Now I'm even more confused than ever!! I am due to got to Tasmania on the 29th Dec. I am doing a degree at Uni, and all of this has gone so quickly. The whole process will have taken about three months. Anyway..I am so worried that I am not going to fit in in the GREAT OZ. I have a husband and 6 yr old daughter. My style is quite smart/dressed up, and as I was packing my case my mum inlaw (who incidentally is staying with us, and from Tassie) was just laughing at the clothes I was putting in the case!! I totally believe it is a better life for my daughter, and all of my husbands family are over there. I am not really close with my family but I do see them. Am I just having the last minute cold feet thing like when you get married, or am I trying to tell myself something? I remember when I got back from 3 months in Tas 6 yrs ago, I touched down in Manchester and I felt at home!! Oh Gosh, I just don't know. Probably just being silly! ANyone got any thoughts?

Cold feet is perfectly natural and to be expected! In the week leading to our flight to Aus, if someone had taken our visas from Mr GG and I we would have been relieved. But now we're here and enjoying it. Homesickness can be difficult to deal with, but you can do your best to prepare for that and recognise it, should it hit. The UK will always be familiar and that's a very comforting thought. But it will always be there. And nothing's forever, unless you want it to be.

You'll be fine.

Mmm you wont want to bother with dressy clothes in Oz they are so casual its untrue, mind you you could always keep your nice clothes and just throw out your shoes at least you will be part way to fitting in. I remember staying with Friends near Cairns who kept a rag outside their house for the guests to wipe their feet... Apologies to any ozzies but the whole bare feet thing makes me cringe.

Its perfectly normal to feel anxious you wouldnt be human otherwise. You could always tell yourself its not forever at least that will take some pressure off and allow you to relax.

I am not sure about Taz but I do think that various parts of Melbourne are fairly classy. Most people tend to get dressed up for a night in the city.

In the panic I thought it was a 4 inch spider with massive eyes. Then learnt the 2nd most important rule of Australian rural living...When confronted by a creature with eyes bigger than its head don't flee the room in panic, stay and keep an eye on it!! Call for help but DONT take your eye off it!! I did and it took an hour to find it again. Pretty scary when you didn't know what it was and turning over all the clothes on the floor carfully with a big stick. This lead to the 3rd rule of Australian rural living....DONT leave piles of your clothes on the floor or any other bag or potential bug hiding place!

Now where the Fkkk did I put those mogodons?

Oh arkon, that would have completely freaked me out - permanently!
I lived up in Mt Tom Price for a while on a caravan park and had to cross a small patch of grass to get to the porta bathrooms. Someone would leave the lights on and of course windows open and the walls would be covered with frogs, insects, you name it!! You often had to shower with half a dozen frogs looking down on your, uuuuugh,,! The grass was also always covered with them and to this day I just can't handle insects, getting better with frogs though! But finding something in my trousers oh you were brave!

Now cockroaches, don't get me started on them .......
Going for me tablets!!!

Haha. Oh my gosh, what have I gone and done!! I just like to dress in nice stuff. Best chuck out all my designer gear then!! I'm taking it, it's more Yves Sant Luigi than Yves Saint Laurent!!
I'm sure I'll be well into not having to put make up on in the morning, and wearing yesterdays clothes sooner or later. Sooo not sure about the no shoe thing though!! As for it not being forever....my husband plans to stay out there after I have graduated..we'll apply for skilled migration, so potentially it is FOREVER
Have you been and come back, or you still there???

You could always get dressed up to go to the casino in Hobart, Tasmania!

We stayed there once (trying to think of the name of it, it had a round tower) but our kids were quite young so we didn't do any gambling, it was the only place in Hobart that seemed to have any decent facilities!

(It's a bit of a long trek to Melbourne though unless you're flying.....we went to Tassie on the overnight ferry...our son freaked out 'cos he'd seen the Titanic movie and all we could hear was the swishing of the water as our cabin was below sea-level...) :scared:

I know the one..Wrest Point it's called. Never actually went there but have seen it. Salamanca Place is meant to be quite nice too!
When I first went to Tas, we too went on the Spirit of Tasmania overnight ferry...OMG. :scared: The boat was rolling side to side. I just couldn't sleep through that...That's the first time I got to experience Tim Tams though!!
I'm sure it's just cold feet...when I get over there and enjoy the permanent state of Wine O'clock it will be greeeeeeeeeeeat!

Thanks mate; will try and arrange to meet up next time I'm in Sussex.

Last night was a reunion with my old workmates, very emotional and a wonderful evening; today we went to a windswept Beachy Head and ate ice cream in a gale before a crawl through some of my fave Brighton pubs.
Should keep me going till the next time....which isn't too far off owing to an impending wedding.

Must go and pack now - Monster Munch, Mint Sauce, Prawn Cocktail crisps, Paxo, Hula Hoops, Taboo, Dry Blackthorn............

Just a little update from Hong Kong........am I supposed to feel pleased that I am on the way back to Queensland? The only thing I am looking forward to is seeing The Bloke.....otherwise I have a sinking feeling in my stomach, the nearer I get to Aus.
I really didn't expect or want to feel like this.
Odd.

(got all the luggage on by the way - approx 20 kilos of hand luggage! oooooppppssssss )
