Hi all, I've been reading through the last few posts and it's comforting to know that there are other people feeling the same way as me!!
Question glittababe, what part of Anglia are you moving/ returning to?? We are in Spain at the mo but fingers crossed we'll be back in Norfolk soon. I have been watching the house prices fro a while now and they have shot up so much!! We have decided to rent for a while and see what happens to the market. Good luck with your move scary isn't it!!! :scared:

Hi there we're in Suffolk. We were lucky enough to have kept our house (we rented it out). The tenants moved out last month, we moved straight in but it just feels all wrong and I'm unsettled. The actual moving back bit was ok no problems, everyone else in family settled straight back into old roles - just me having the problem! House prices definately gone up! We've looked into selling and then remortgaging route but even then we wouldn't get a half decent house (and if we did the mortgage would be my wages)! At the moment we have a very small mortgage, so it seems the logical thing to do is to stay here for 6 mths and see how I feel. Its early days yet!

I want to head back to the uk, when will depend on us making a final decision. Hubbie still wants to stay, I don't mind staying for longer but we need to make a decision on the house asap so this may force our hand.

The buyers were supposed to be cash buyers and has been going on since October. Now we find out they are re-mortgaging their own property to get ours and we are selling at 10k less than we wanted.

We used all our money to get here so getting back will be a problem. I agree with the fact that we may need a fresh start, i.e a new house. Yet, for a 3 bed rental in our home town it will cost us £800 per month, £500 for a 2 bed flat.

Oh, I just don't know, 1 unhappy son here in oz, one unhappy teenager in the uk and one happy husband in oz but unhappy at the thought of going back to the uk  I feel like piggy in the middle!

Help!

Mandy

Hi Mandy
My advice is that if you are not sure if you want to come back to UK then don't make a premature exit from Australia. This is the position we were in - we left Oz after 18 months because I was pregnant and we wanted to have the baby in the UK, with family support. Whilst I have no regrets about why we came back, and the fact that we have had family around with a newborn, we did leave Australia before we were ready and we are now in the position that we are in the UK without Oz citizenship, which limits our options for the future. We haven't answered the question whether Australia is for us long-term - we had good times, great times and down times while we were there - and it is most likely that we will be moving back again in November 05. This is to give us another chance to see what we want for the long-term future, and at least the security of our citizenship which takes the pressure of immediate short-term decisions.

I'm sure you have a lot of things to consider, but if it were me, based on your uncertainty and my hindsight (such a wonderful thing!!!), I would try and make a go of it there. I guess it must be hard with a daughter inthe UK tho :(

Wish you the very best of luck and lots of fun in Cairns!

If we do sell, it will free up some cash to go back with but then we will have to start again and go back to a rental. Decisions, decisions

Mandy

My advice Mandy for what it is worth, NO do not sell your house in the UK. I came out here in 2000 to be with my new husband, and settle in Vancouver and build a life here, with a view to selling in the UK and investing here. I am so pleased I didn't, as now we are heading home, me at the end of this month and my husband a few months later. Canada is a beautiful place, but it did not work for me, and I was never really happy here. Yes the lifestyle is better, and Vancouver is stunning, but...I miss the Brits., and England is so ALIVE. At least at the beginning we will have to rent, until the house can be sold and the proceeds divided between my first husband and myself, BUT it is a nice cushion, and will eventually make the move back easier to get re-established. "Hang on to your property" is the advice I was given by all expats when I came over, so now I say the same to you. Good Luck. It is so nice to know other people are going home, I was beginning to feel a real failure.

Thanks. How are you enjoying being back in the UK? It is a bit daunting to give up the lifestyle, but very exciting to be coming home.

Hi guys,

A quick update, due to circumstances we are keeping the house.

This means that we are having to come home quicker than planned but hey I know a little lad that will be mighty pleased when we tell him! :D

I lived in Sydney for 4 years in the early 90s and gained Australian citizenship. I'm actually thinking of returning, this time to Adelaide where my mother and stepfather live (they emigrated there too). I was due to fly out there on Monday but we decided we weren't prepared to give up on the UK just yet.

If we do go, it will be (a) for the family support, particularly so our young kids have grandparents and (b) for the chance for me to get out of the boom/bust world of IT and start my own business. So, a slightly different situation to many of the wide eyed folks on the Australia board.

Yes it is the most important thing in the world. When friends and relatives have visited us here they have been amazed that I would want to return to the UK. But Home truly is where the heart is, so out goes the pool, and the hottub, and the big car and the beachfront house, and hello who knows what! I don't hate canada and have had some fabulous times here, but having said that I have never ever been so lonely in all my life. Husband is a little aprehensive going into the unknown, but hey life is just a bit adventure so they say. I hope you make it back home some day too.

Well done! Good luck with the move. I will pass on any good tips/advice I get over the next week or so. Only four weeks and back to the daily train journeys. I can't wait.
