Re: Fences in Britain (the kind around a house that is)
Nooooooooo!!!! Oh my goodness please please no!! Dont do this to my homeland. Keep colourbond OUT of blighty i say
One of the biggest things i hate about this country is their ability to make a garden look like a wasteland dump, and for me the colourbond reminds me of corrogated iron...arghhhh... absolutely ugly!
I will picket outside your house.. i mean it

Asbestos is perfectly safe, as long as it's in good condition. The only time one needs to be careful is when cutting or drilling into it, or removing it, because it tends to shed tiny fibres that can be easily inhaled, and that's when serious damage can occur.
But to be worried about having asbestos in or near a building you use, is a bit like refusing to go in a supermarket because they sell cigarettes! Again, unless you light a cigarette then it's perfectly safe to be around!

Don't get me wrong, it's not the type of fencing I would use on my ideal home, but it is adequate for general use.
On my ideal home, all sides of it would be surrounded by a solid brick or concrete wall, rendered and painted, with some polished wooden slats, as is used in many homes here.
This is also dog-proof, and looks absolutely fantastic if done properly.

Not strictly true. You don't need planning permission unless the fence/ wall would exceed 1m next to a highway used by vehicles, or 2 metres elsewhere.
Also need to check whether the Council has issued an Article 4 direction which removed permitted development rights.
You are correct about listed buildings/ conservation areas.

Aw ****, that means I am becoming Australian then, first the wanting proper showers and under sink storage cupboards and now the fencing, cancel that one way ticket!
Whilst I don't think it's pretty, it is very practical....can I just ask the colourbond haters have you got a large athletic typed dog at all? I don't want to keep my boy in the house all the time.
My ultimate dream is a walled garden, I love the Victorian style ones, but in all honest it could be a while before I can afford a country cottage with a walled garden, and am not likely to be able to build a stone wall.
So I guess all my neighbours are going to hate me when I go back and erect the first colourbond fence in the neighbourhood.

No issue with colorbond fencing... especially as it keeps half of Wollongong employed making the stuff at Port Kembla.
Not sure how a flat steel fence would could with Atlantic gales for a few months each year in the UK. The pressure build up on a 40' fence would be substantial, but I suppose if they can handle cyclones over here then it should cope. Who knows

I have cream colourbond and it brightens up my garden - I like it.

A slightly misleading rule of thumb. Alot of people will need planning permission because there is a road adjoining their property, even if it as the rear.
