Talking about villages, we've looked seriously at Exminster. I know it is a bit bloated & overgrown with development these last several decades, but still a nice location in relation to Exeter, with the cycle path and walking trails up and down the estuary. And several nice pubs, such as the Turf and the Double Locks. The Stowey Arms seems like a very nice local, had a pint in there a couple of times.
We've looked at several places in Devington Park, the converted Mental Hospital there. We have cycle trails and lovely pubs too. See my linky xxx |

I think every town and city in the UK had one or more workhouses, lunatic asylums etc. These were/are very substantial buildings, often well-built and of architectural merit. Now, for better or worse, society prefers care in the community, etc., so most of the big institutions are gone and the buildings demolished or repurposed. I remember visiting various school friends, suicidal, dangerous, caught up in drug issues etc., in lunatic asylums back in the 60s and 70s. Fascinating places to visit, but fortunately I never had to live in one.
