Exchanging Spanish driving licence for Uk licence

we are moving back to the Uk in early July
My husbands Spanish driving licence expires on 30 th june( he exchanged his UK licence for a Spanish one in 2005)
He is 72
If he applies for a renewal of his Spanish licence in June, it may take up to 3 months to receive.
I phoned DVLA, who said bring back the expired licence and exchange it for a UK one when back in the UK, and not to try and renew the Spanish one.
However I am worried about the licence being expired.the man assured me he would not have to retake the driving test.
Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

Re: Exchanging Spanish driving licence for Uk licence

Since he is 70 or older then contact the Age UK organisation for advice is the best bet.
Age UK | The UK's largest charity working with and for older people
He will be reactivating his old UK licence rather than exchanging his Spanish licence.
