Which again is crazy bureaucracy.
Just because you have become a resident in the UK does not necessarily mean that you have ceased to also be a driver and resident in NZ.

Re: Drivers licence exchange ... manual proof.

Hi All,

I'm going through the same issue at the moment trying to convert my NZ licence to UK.

After contacting NZTA, they advised that what I require is a 'Letter of Entitlement', which they are able to issue free of charge and via email. They sent me some information along with the letter:

Unfortunately, the NZ Transport Agency does not record the type of transmission used for a practical licence test. This is because, once a person passes the full licence stage, they are deemed to have enough experience and skill to drive both transmissions. It isn’t recorded because it has no bearing on the type of full licence a person gains and therefore not required for our licensing needs.

When the DVLA first started advising NZ licence holders that they needed to gain confirmation they sat their test in a manual, we contacted them to advise the above. We also advised them that while we don’t record the transmission as such, we do have an automatic condition for restricted licence holders who complete their test in an automatic vehicle. If a person has never had that condition, it can be inferred they at least completed their restricted test in a manual vehicle. After explaining this to one of the Policy Advisors in the DVLA Swansea office, they accepted that if we could state a person never held an automatic condition on their licence, they would be able to convert to a manual UK licence.

I'm about to submit my application along with that information, so I'll keep you posted as to how I get on!

Do NZTA give you evidence that you never had this restriction?

Yes, this is detailed on the Letter of Entitlement.

Great news, I have received my licence after posting my application with the document above, and there is no ‘78’ on the back which means it is valid for manual cars.
It was a bit of effort but it paid off!

Great to hear a success story regarding this, thank you for sharing it.
