Booked flights yesterday and after initial excitement I feel deflated today wondering if I have made wrong decision, probably because wife wants to stay. kids glad to go back but I am questioning whether they would be better off here in long run but at end of day 16 year old hates it.
It will be in your interests to do a tax return when you leave because you should get back all the tax you have paid this financial year. Also, if you have been on a temporary visa you can get all your super back as well.

Nothing inherently better for kids here so dont beat yourself up about that one - most first world countries are pretty similar.

Thanks Quoll.

Full steam ahead. Tomorrows our last day before shippers come in. Had my first goodbye with a dear friend. Not easy and I did have a moment where I thought what am I doing I've got some lovely friends (and boy have they shown their love this week). The bigger and long term picture though still feels like I need to be in the UK and I'm glad I can see that in these emotional moments.

Being tested a little though. 16 month old threw up 4 times last night. Then at 230am my daughter wakes up with gunky eyes and then today whilst out on my last walk around the golf course bubba drops his comfort elephant "Ellie" He did get to sleep in the end but i certainly didnt need that especially as he is so dependant on it for the flight! Oh and bubba also got hold of a marker pen and fell over and marked the edge of the sofa. (Tops off my son cleaning his DSi with water a few days ago!!!). Stories to tell when I'm old!

Thanks for the support everyone. x

Good on you!

Here is the link about tax claiming - there are a couple of things to do before leaving, if you can, but you dont need to go the whole hog and submit one now http://ato.gov.au/individuals/conten...tent/14747.htm

I should thank my lucky stars. I've had my fair share of illness and my health isn't great, hubby also now carries an injury so just being in work is great. I'd love to move back, put the kids in UK school system. Go and see my GP and await tests (feeling very piece meal here) and eventually hubby and I work for more than just daycare costs.

I've just had to delete the massive ramble in half! Hopefully some sort of counselling will help me think about my life differently but it sucks right now (health and homesickness).

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh[/QUOTE

Been back in the UK 8 weeks, already renovating house we bought before we came back, booked in for shoulder operation with top class surgeon ,all free on NHS.Three operations in AUS all done by incompetent surgeon, this was confirmed by specialist here, missus has 3 job interviews lined up soon.Wasnt really homesick for UK,but the decision was kind of made for us,4 years in AUS was kind of making us old before our time.Never thought i would be posting on here a few years ago, but got in far more of a rut in AUS than i ever did in the UK,just got pissed off with crap schools, poor health care, expensive shopping, have seen many poms grinning it and bearing it,even though they do bugger all and life starts and ends at the beach.Kids took to returning well,we are all citizens so can always return, but at the moment cannot see a reason why, way better off here finnancially, and way too busy as well,do miss blue skys and some things, but a hell of a lot of things i will never miss.Tip of the day have a stop off on the way back, and see all the chinese kids in KL having a good time, wearing trendy clothes, gadgets. While their Aussie counterparts in perth walk around like drugged up tramps, heading for Margaret river.Aussie lifestyle? never really found any.
Catch: I am interested to hear of the immediately positive experiences you have had with the NHS. I'm practically on my knees due to a really very incompetant health system in my host country, and one of my main reasons for yearning to return to the UK system is because I would really like my pain to be helped and any surgeries to be good.

I'll let you know how I get on with NHS. Health care has cost me way too much. Going to pay £155 to see consultant 2 days after we arrive and then he is happy to move me over to NHS. Intial appointments can be up to 11 weeks and after 1 year of issues and being sent away with more meds that don't seem to work I'm happy to pay. Besides I've paid £155 10 times over!

Had a bad fall at work, got rushed to Peel in mandurah, saw an orthopaedic surgeon who really should have sent me over to a shoulder specialist, spent first night in hospital, then turfed out of my bed until the doc got my insurance details, had 4 days at home with a badly shattered humerous head very painfull,no sleep for 4 days, then admitted (after doc knew he was going to get paid) for 10 days operation carried out, blamed x ray for leaving chunk of bone in there.. 2nd operation 4 months later, then signed me back to work 2 weeks after opp,had to seek 2nd opinion to get signed off work,2 years later still off work,UK surgeon told me what a hash the treatment was in Perth, awaiting 4th shoulder operation next month... difference in UK you can see a top flight surgeon without getting out your credit card.My experience may be a bit severe, but staying over there was not an option

Gosh I feel for you. For me I've been pushed around for over a year between ENT and gastroenterologist. One even told me to accept the new you. That's not a heap of fun. Tonsilectomy cost me a bomb but i wasn't allowed to present to emergency until I couldn't breathe. Tried to kick a peritonsilor absess with drugs but in the end called the private doc to whip them out. As much as he is lovely the public system forced me to go private. I certainly wasn't taking another course of metronidazole. To be fair they did offer to take them out when it first happened but I didn't realize I'd have to wait until I couldn't breathe to be admitted when it occurred again.

Right tonsil still causing me problems. Reflux burning my whole throat and on a silly amount of nexium. Stress doesn't make it any better but I'm sure but until I can have a run of health I need help support around me and knowing I was going to be yet another $2k down again this year it helped with my decisions to move back. I do hope the NHS is better. Will have to take my lot with that one.

Would love to wish everyone some good health. It certainly is the most important thing in the world x x thanks for all the messages.

Ps. For those who have been following the move. My 16 month old has slept through the night and after crying for two days I think he's taken to his new elephant. Was dreading the flight because he refused to suck his fingers as normal to sleep but we might be ok

Hi, just wanted to check something about the tax. We hope to leave Australia in January and my husband would do a tax return before we leave. Would he really get back all the tax he has paid since July 2010 or would it just be part of it.

He also has a super fund. We have permanent residents visas. Does anyone know if he can "cash in" his super before we leave?

Thanks for any advice on this.

Hi
I have recently looked into this as I am leaving in November but probably not been here as long as you. I was told to fill in a tax return if I think I am due tax back but I cannot do it without my group certificate. It was slightly more complicated to do it in middle of tax year. they wanted a copy of my passport and my one way flight ticket to UK. they said I could also do it from the UK at end of tax year and send them my group certificate. probably leave it for now. just my luck I will owe them.
I also have Qsuper pension but they will only pay it back if you are on a temporary visa. you have to send them proof that your visa is cancelled and you have left. They will tax your contributions 35%.
I am a perm resident so I cannot do that so will have to leave it there and claim it back when I retire. I have registered an online account with Qsuper so you can keep track and update your contact details. go to their website and it is straight forward.
