Has anyone done this and is this acceptable to DMV? My permanent residence is now UK but I still want to maintain by USA license and car fro the months I return

Re: DMV ?
I think you really need to be a resident to have a California driving licence. Being a resident means you will also have to pay California State Income taxes.
You can certainly drive in California on your UK licence, but I don’t know if you have to have a California driving licence to insure a car you own. ( You can insure a car in the UK using a US licence as my son did this a few years back)

Eligibility for a state license is based on you establishing residency, and given California's reputation for taxing current and even former residents, I would be cautious about retaining links that imply residency of California, and for tax reasons I would recommend returning your DL as evidence that you are no longer a CA resident. This has no bearing on your tax liability on rental income on a CA property.
In an ideal world I would recommend establishing tax residency in another state, and swapping your license before you left the US, would be a good tax mitigation strategy.
I hear that SD is a particularly useful state for registering and obtaining a DL, which can be done with an overnight stay in a hotel, using the hotel's address.

Re: DMV ?
Thx Pulaski, so even if I maintain my property and use if for couple months vacation, as long as I am resident in uk for rest of year, I wouldn't have to pay Cal tax? I get a Cal State Pension . Would that make me have to forever pay Cal tax even if I don't live there and just rent my property?
I wouldn't be able to insure my car that I keep in Cal if I didn't have a cal license would I ??
