Depositing USD Cheque in UK bank account
Has anyone run into difficulty trying to deposit a foreign cheque into their UK bank account? I've received a USD cheque from the US government and didn't think it would be an issue however, I was told by my bank they stopped accepting foreign drawn cheques 2 years ago and it seems so have other UK banks.
Can anyone recommend banks that do accept foreign cheques please?

Barclays?

They were the most flexible for my son, who is at uni in the UK, although we didn't try depositing a USD cheque.
If not them, maybe HSBC? They do have international US/UK arrangements of various kinds.

Thanks Lion, yes have been back now for 6 years plus
Will definitely try Barclay's and get an account open if they accept foreign cheques - thanks for the recommendation

That's OK, but I recommend HSBC over Barclays. HSBC certainly accept $ cheques and provide overall better service IMHO.

Good to know for what I hope will be my future. I remember that the Portsmouth (where my son is) HSBC was very down-at-heel and giant queues when my son and I were bank shopping so we never even got to talk to anybody there. Nat West ditto, and Lloyds were hopeless, so we were taken in by Barclays who seemed to be more clued in to taking on board students with little money and coming from another country.

Open an account with transferwise and get the US gov to pay the funds into it.
