Cheese

So, even though I am supposedly a cook, I do get lazy...

On my own, decided a glass of wine, crackers, bit of fruit, and a lovely cheese assortment sounded like an easy dinner.

Favourites lying around today were:

French Brie
Wisconsin Cheddar (in this case the curds)
Danish Havarti
Smoked Gouda

and a nice new addition...

English White Stilton with Apricots (Trader Joe's btw)

What are some of your favourites?

Agreed nice white, creamy, crumbly Cheshire or Lancashire. IMHO you can only get the real deal in the said counties.

Love crumbly Cheshire cheese, also like Stilton, Danish Blue and strong (sharp) cheddars.

Re: Cheese

Can't remember what it's called, but it's an English cheddar from Whole Foods, pretty reasonable price and it's lovely, sharp too.

They also have a lovely mild parmesan cheese, again, I can't remember what it's called, I just know where it is kept in the store :D

There's also a lovely cheap blue cheese I get from time to time, but you guessed it, no idea of the name.

I'm pretty useless here then

Re: Cheese

What cheese don't I like!! The stuff is nectar to me! :D In fact I'm eating some Wensleydale with pickled onions in it right now! I love all the cheese with stuff in that comes out at Christmas. Bit sad this year as we're spending Christmas in the US so I haven't been able to take advantage of the vast selection, and no white stilton with Christmas cake! Shocking! I need to stop exclaiming!

So probably my current faves are white stilton, roquefort, camembert, proper feta, and a nice bit of Wensleydale, but it's subject to change. I'm not a fan of cheddar at all though.

mmmm cheeeeeeese!

I just bought some White Stilton at Trader Joe's. Had apricots in it, but I think there were other kinds too.

I do like most kinds of cheese also.

We bought some sticky toffee pudding cheddar from Trader Joes... it was surprisingly good. Definitely a dessert cheese to have with a glass of port.

:confused:I do miss bog standard, chip-as-chips mild chedder from Sainsburies.

American bright orange mild chedder is too hard and sharp.

Mont Jack is a fair substitute, but it's too rubbery.

I'm a fussy bastard.

Cheese is quite expensive in America, too.

Ridiculous dairy subsidies in this country. They artificially prop up the price of milk and cheese.

Ha….Yup it is an abomination. Here try this: get a can empty the contents and let it dry out for a day or two. I think you’ll find the texture quit interesting. For a more gourmet experience try eating it on the can it comes in. MMMmmmm….crunchy…….

THAT my friend is your problem. You need to go for a regional brand. Tillamook is really good. You might want to go to a wine and cheese shop and check there. Kraft is way too easy a choice and too massed produced.

Your joking? most of the cabot stuff is rubbish...not tried the other one though.

There is certainly a lot of good cheese around though, but the own brand cheap stuff is utter rubbish, impressive if it's aged 30 days, that's not cheese.

I used to like the cheapo own brand tesco's crap for cheese toasties, way more sharp than the average stuff around here :)

That's the thing, there is good cheese, but it's not cheap....even the own brand rubbish back in blighty had more bite to it than a lot of the bland stuff around here.

Saying that, trader joes and whole foods do have excellent choices, but tad pricey for a lot of it.

Velveeta and Kraft Singles!! No, just kidding...

I like all blue cheeses; stilton and saint agur are my favourites. I live in Wisconsin, so I get very good cheeses from the farmers market...really strong goats cheese, mature swiss, all different kinds of smoked cheeses, etc. Sharper the better for me...
