Default Changing tax to UK

I appreciate it's probably been asked before - but does anyone have personal experience of closing their Oz tax affairs and starting again with UK tax? Was it straightforward?

For the large majority of people British income tax is very simple, with tax deducted from your pay each week/ month such that you neither owe nor are owed tax at the end of the tax year. There are virtually no deductions that an employee can make from their pay to reduce their tax bill. Therefore it can be very difficult to get a form to even complete a tax return because HMCR does not want a mountain of virtually pointless paperwork to process.

Tip: if you time your arrival in the UK close to the end of the tax year (April, 5), just long enough to earn your annual allowance before the year end then you'll get your pay almost tax free, or at least get the tax refunded when your tax code has been straightened out (you may be on an emergency tax code for a couple of weeks until your tax status has been clarified).

Thanks. We left the UK nine years ago so are conversant with the PAYE there - I was just wondering how people going back from Australia to the UK manage the two tax regimes for the split year.
