Car hire in UK

Can anybody recommend a cheap car hire company? We are landing in Manchester, hopefully being picked up from the airport and then staying in Yorkshire/ Derbyshire with family for the month of July. Have been comparing hire costs and it seems extortionate. We are a family of 4 so will need something not too small. Any help would be appreciated. Also, does anyone know if hired cars can be taken to France?

Strongly advise that you use a price comparison site as the car hire rates have shot through the roof this past year. We've used Budget a few times and they have a good selection of hire cars - but its all 'much of a muchness', and price is the key factor every time!

And yes, we regularly land at Gatwick, drive to Dover and spend two weeks driving through France each summer in a hire car. Go for the 'with petrol', option when you pick up the car. The hire companies buy their petrol at a discount which is passed on to the customer and with a full tank to start you off on your travels its not only convenient, but cheaper too.
