Just apply for a new licence. When we applied for a new licence in 2016 we had been out of the country for 29 years but still had our old paper licences. No test required at all.

you cannot get a new UK DL until you are a UK resident. Then apply for a new one with change of address.

very true, I should have mentioned that.

We didn’t have to send in our old licenses until after we had received our new ones which was nice.

You will not have to retake your driving test, otherwise the information in the following link applies. If you can do it at the Post Office, so much the better. I have found them to be generally quite efficient.

Exchange your paper driving licence for a photocard licence - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

For insurance plug your details into the three main comparison websites and that should give you a good idea of how much you should be paying:

Tip: Counterintuitively comprehensive insurance is usually cheaper than fire/theft and third party.

If you’re concerned about buying a lemon it’s probably safest to buy from a dealer who offers a 12 month warranty and a fresh MOT. Then all you need to do is tax the car and then fill in the ‘New Keeper’ slip of the V5C and post it to the DVLA. The former can be done online.
