Default Bury St Edmund

Hi all
Does anyone have any experience with this town?
Close to Cambridge
Got all amenities
Looks like it would be a great place to live?
Can anyone give guidance
Thank you

Hi Jock, me again!
My mum in law lives there, so we visit quite often. It's a lovely town, quite affluent, good shops, very historic, got a cathedral. I think the schools are good.
Wonderful surrounding countryside and villages. Not far from Stansted airport.
The only minus for us would be the lack of a fast rail link with London, which is vital for Mr J!

Stansted to London is about three quarters of an hour.
You can also change at Tottenham Hale for the Victoria Line.

Bishops Stortford is a nice town also, as is Ware. Excellent pubs , plenty of eating places and supermarkets.

Quite a well kept secret part of the commuter belt really.

And an airport on your doorstep!

I agree! We lived not far away and loved coming to Bury.

It has a lot to offer. Wonderful street market 2 days a week year round, too.

Nice place. Bury. Just over the half hour drive to Cambridge (I told you to watch out for the dreaded A 14, did I not? LOL) - Nah, it's all good. The only unfortunate thing about Bury is the blight on the landscape which is the Sugar Beet factory (established by one of Stephen Fry's ancestors apparently!) but the rest is quite attractive. Lots of nice villages within cooee (some very expensive). Trains could be a bit of an issue if you wanted to get to London fast - they arent fast. You could do much worse

Here's somewhere for the kids! Bury has always had a roller skating rink, used to be called Rollerbury. I googled it and this is its latest incarnation. There is also a new multiplex cinema.

But Stansted is 50 miles from Bury St Edmunds so doesn't help much with commuting from Bury surely?

I used to live between Bury and Sudbury - my oldest daughter was born in the West Suffolk. It's a lovely little city - reasonable shopping, lovely abbey gardens, good restaurants, and is surrounded by beautiful countryside. But you probably wouldn't want to commute from there to London. It's over 1.5 hours by train.

I was answering the Stansted airport point, not the rest.

Spent the afternoon at Ickworth with a friend who is a Bury girl and picked her brains on the pros and cons. She says it is a nice place to live and the schools are good - there is still a middle school system in the town's schools FYI. She pointed out the transport issue as being of concern if you wanted to go anywhere - commuting to London wouldnt be that easy. Commuting to Cambridge, Ipswich or Norwich would be easier. Housing is cheaper than Cambridge but not as cheap as some other places further north. All the villages in the immediate surrounding area are pretty good, some more expensive (Lavenham) than others!

Walking around Ickworth was fabulous and the walled garden there with its wildflower garden in full bloom was amazing.

No sweat! I was having lunch with her anyway!!! Oh, and if you or any of your family are into knitting, there's a nice little wool shop too - that's a definite plus!!!!

Love Ickworth! Is the Beehive pub still open nearby?
