paid out of the pockets of the taxpayers both hardworking and those losing their jobs hand over fist while those very same "guardians" of our so called Parliamentary "Democracy" sit on an MPs £67k basic salary which have been topped up big time by all these utterly unwarranted expenses claims in far, far too many cases.
The fundamental issue here is that MPs are paid far too little. For years they've been scared to give themselves a raise (they vote on their own salary) because of how it would look to 'ordinary people' - and to compensate they have expanded the use of expenses to defray as many of the costs associated with being an MP as possible, (and often way beyond taking the piss.)
In a representative democracy you should demand the best and brightest to represent you. You're not going to get that if the pay isn't competitive. By paying too little what you end up with are either serial underachievers who are easy to corrupt (half of labour) or those who are already rich (all of the tories and the rest of labour.)
You Expat guys and girls out there in the big wider world - think yourselves very lucky you're not here in this "green and pleasant land" any more.

Yes....the very same one.....and don't forget the MPs who received large expenses payments for mortgages that did not exist, huge payments for clearing out moats circling their vast country estates, expenses for 500 bags of horse manure, dog food - to go with the cat food, monstrous plasma TV sets, gourmet foods - you think of something and these geezers have claimed for it....those geezers sitting on the green benches of the House of Commons (not to mention some bloody Lords gracing the red benches of the Upper Chamber, most of them there by the grace of God rather than via a ballot box) - expenses totalling many, many thousands of dosh paid out of the pockets of the taxpayers both hardworking and those losing their jobs hand over fist while those very same "guardians" of our so called Parliamentary "Democracy" sit on an MPs £67k basic salary which have been topped up big time by all these utterly unwarranted expenses claims in far, far too many cases. Pigs with snouts in the trough have absolutely no comparison with the Palace of Westminster.
Today the Speaker of the House of Commons is to announce his resignation at 14:30hrs BST.
A large number of MPs look set to be deselected by their local Constituency Committees (a General Election must by law be held in the UK before June 2010) and it even looks likely that more than just a handful of MPs will be held to account in courts of law on charges of fraud.
These are the same people (both male and female) who have backed all the legislation which results in ordinary people being sent to prison for not having a valid TV licence, obtaining more social welfare payments than they are entitled to, and pensioners being banged up in the clink for not paying outrageously high council tax payments - such payments being deliberately with-held on a matter of principle.. but no matter - they get locked up.
Yes - the very same people who have been milking the system hand over fist and it's only since this whole expenses scandal came to light that we saw a surge of panic stricken MPs clutching cheques made out for very large sums as repayments due to the taxpayers of Britain. One Labour MP, with a tiny majority in his Northamptonshire seat, was one of the first rushing to repay back over £41,000 of ill gotten gains.

snow made from the waterboarding tank!
Seems that US/UK politics is sorta paralleling itself... 2 speakers - Pelosi with the waterboarding crap, Martin with the expenses.
Overall, no honor amongst thieves.
