Just want to wish everyone a VERY Happy New Year!
Here's hoping you have great success with your New Year's resolutions. A very happy New Year to you to UK Winds. We are still enjoying our family over here in Portugal from the USA. The weather has been astoundingly good. Temps 18/ 20 deg's ( ie warm) Reminds me of the reasons we moved further south from the Netherlands ( and definitely UK) in our retirement  My ED can't believe that she is waking up to sunshine pouring into her bedroom every morning, that she can step outside into the garden and sunbathe in the garden chairs by 10 am.Seattle more or less missed summer last year so she is delighted to still find it here, as are we. You must keep us informed about your friends final decision on where to live. It will be fascinating |

You must keep us informed about your friends final decision on where to live. It will be fascinating My friends are having a blast in the west country and she is really loving the people. They spent Christmas in Brighton visiting with family, and the last week in Bristol. So far so good. Based on their emails it would seem that Bristol went well. They did a few outings from there. Very nice place but I sense Brighton was a bigger hit with them than Bristol metro. They are leaving for Birmingham today for 10 days and that includes trips to the Oxford area. They sent me a link to their hotel in the Birmingham area and the only thing I can say is...wow. It's very impressive with a seriously medieval architecture and the daily price is far better than something comparable here in the states. Except for eating out and gasoline, they both feel the UK is cheaper in general than much of the States. He is doing all the driving because it's freaking her out to sit on the right side of the car and pass traffic lol. But to be honest I think that juxtaposition does take a little getting use to. Everyone thinks that she and he are both Americans. Guess he'll have to explain where he is from quite a few times. I look forward to their impressions of the Midlands. |
Re: Best relocation areas in the UK?
My friends have really enjoyed their time in the Birmingham area. Very diverse with so many points of interests and things to do and homes are quite affordable. Oxford went extremely well and I think his wife favored that city the most. They leave for France, Belgium and the Netherlands for about 12 days on Tuesday. Then on return they will be in Manchester and Liverpool. My friend told me that he feels more alive, and so excited about their future in the UK and she is loving it so far. I'm very happy for them.

Re: Best relocation areas in the UK?
Interesting news. My friends are feeling a very strong reaction to being in the Midlands area. They decided to do a quick day trip to the Manchester area and based on early impressions the Midlands has more of a comfortable feel to them both. She loves the homes in Oxford but outer Birmingham and Manchester might offer the best of all worlds. They wouldn't be that far from his family in Scotland and the nightlife is excellent in both Birmingham and Manchester and living on the outskirts could work quite well.
My wife is getting excited about this news. That's a whole other issue. |

Knutsford, Woodford, High Lane, But are all nice areas near to Manchester, I would also look at Tarporley in Cheshire and also Heswall and Caldy on the Wirral (great views over to the Welsh mountains and not that far from either Manchester, Chester and Liverpool. I do like Birmingham but I personally would not live anywhere in the near surrounding areas. Glad your friends are having a great time.

I'll convey that information. They are having so much fun. I had to mention to them they do have to come back to the States for a few more months before moving over permanently. In response they sent me pictures of a French Bistro they will be dining at in France. Always the characters! |

They are going to have several excellent choices to consider. I hate to say I told them so but.... I just kinda felt the Midlands is an idea region of the UK to find much of everything they might want to be near to access. And it's not that far from London for those fun getaway trips. Pretty much having one's cake and eating it to. And my buddy told me driving distances are next to nothing compared to the states. He just has to help the Mrs get use to driving on the other side of the car and road. |
Re: Best relocation areas in the UK?
Once my friends find the idea property they will need to move quickly because I'm noticing that prime investments move quite fast in the UK. I've been taking a peak and several of the houses that caught my eye sold in less than one week. Very competitive market.

Would they not be better off renting to start with? Just the stamp duty alone on a £700k property would be £25,000, add in solicitors fees and moving costs and it’s probably around £30k. An expensive mistake to make if they decide they don’t like the area after a few months and would rather be elsewhere...... Several days in one location simply isn't enough time to experience the whole thing. No idea what UK rental periods are these days - I was used to 3 months, potentially renewable - so 3 or 6 months would seem a jolly good idea for starters. |

An expensive mistake to make if they decide they don’t like the area after a few months and would rather be elsewhere...... I'm afraid my family might not be able to escape that tax a few years from now because we are considering keeping the house and using it for winter holidays. The stamp duty penalty punishes those that move to the UK and buy a home while owning another property abroad. I think the loophole would require a person to sell their home then buy in the UK, and then turn around and buy in another country. Might be possible to sell one's property to a tax shelter and later buy it back. A specialized attorney could figure it all out. We will see. |
Re: Best relocation areas in the UK?
Stamp duty is very progressive though. We bought our flat for £140,000 in 2015, and the stamp duty was minimal. It's only above £250,000 that the rates really go up. And there are plenty of places in the UK where decent flats are less than 150 and decent houses less than 250. |

Come and live in the posher part of my town. You can take me out for a drink. Remember the old adage Down South, "Sell your cardboard box and buy a castle from the Jocks." |

The government really does love our money. I totally understand the purpose of the stamp duty tax. I'm sure there are tons of people that wish to buy second homes as investments and will park those funds in properties in the UK. And the residual effect is the cost of housing going up and pricing the nearby residents out of the market. That happens all the time in America. But I really feel for people that are looking for properties one million pounds and higher. 15% hurts! Might be less dining out evenings.
I was born and lived near Liverpool for half my life the other part in California and Florida. Have to be honest I love Cornwall and Devon ... |

It's possible to find beautiful properties in the UK.

Especially having kids. I've told my wife it's she and I versus the kids which essentially means space so everyone can coexist. |

So where are your friends now I am reading the thread with intrigue as to where they will settle. I was born and lived near Liverpool for half my life the other part in California and Florida. Have to be honest I love Cornwall and Devon ... The world travelers left for France on Tuesday and by all accounts are having way too much fun. They went to a restaurant in Paris last night that had what they called the best dessert either has ever experienced. It was a chocolate mousse. I've never eaten one of those. I asked them if it was better than Crispy Crème donuts lol. They leave for Toulouse tomorrow. One night there, then on to Belgium. |

Re: Best relocation areas in the UK?
If they want city life then Bristol is up and coming with a good music scene. Good rail line to London and airports. For a rural area Anglesey has beautiful views and direct trains to London, ferry to Dublin and DUB airport.

I felt a good vibe in that place, albeit a few years back. Hoping it's still going well for them there. :fingerscrossed: |
Re: Best relocation areas in the UK?
My friends truly enjoyed their time in France. To quote them they said the visit to France was short but just another reminder why they are excited to move to the UK. Culture, tradition and better cost of living in the UK with Europe right on Great Britain's doorstep. They said Paris was so much fun and interesting and they look forward to returning but for a much longer stay. They said Toulouse was so nice they decided to spend an extra night there. His wife was in awe of Toulouse. My buddy told me that for anyone planning a trip to Paris, would miss out on the true essence of France if they did not spend time traveling to the other cities & regions. They arrived in Belgium today.

Re: Best relocation areas in the UK?
Hi, there are some wonderful market towns in Yorkshire, there are lots of wonderful historic places/attractions (hard to say for someone originally from Lancashire lol) we love knaresborough, Harrogate, York, Richmond to name a few. The airport's are Leeds/Bradford, Newcastle, Doncaster/Sheffield and for a larger international you have Manchester. Leeds is a great city as is Newcastle (it's a drive but we'll we'll a visit)
