Beer prices way back when...

Just been watching The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and I love the bit where the barman is surprised when Ford, after buying six pints of bitter, tells him to keep the change from a fiver...

First pint I ever bought was 22p.

Sigh...

When I was looking at uni's...Wolverhampton and Aston were selling £1 pints...this was in '98....quite tempting because where I went, the union charged £3.20

12-1/2p for a pint of heavy, a bargain I thought.

I think petrol was about 35 or 40p a gallon at the time.

Well I never drank beer, for me the only thing I remember the price of was, when I was a kid I worked in the corner shop and milk was 5p a pint.
That was back before they had a till, the money went into a drawer and we had to tally it all up in our head, did wonders for my maths scores.

So, how many farthings make a groat?

(It's sad: I know the answer without googling...)

I worked in a newsagents that had a till but with two people behind the counter we had to add it in our heads and just put in the total to keep out of each other's way. I don't remember one customer ever questioning their total.

Back when I started going to the pub there were two in our town that had bar billiards which we enjoyed. One of them actually had sawdust on the floor. A pint was 1/9d. (One shilling and ninepence.. written 1/9d?? I can't bloody remember anymore.. Oh bugger I'm losing my mind.)

No one questioned us either, I think their maths skills were probably worse than mine  Mostly It was sweets and cigs sales.
I did learn how to precisely cut a 2oz piece of cheese, who would ever think to ask for 2oz of cheese now days.

Like cigarettes... I gave up smoking 35 years ago, so I don't know if they still have packs of ten in the UK. But in addition to packets of ten, some brands use to sell packs of 5 (Park Drive was one.) And, some tobacconists sold single cigarettes to kids like me. Mind you I soon graduated to Gauloises Disque Bleu .. much more sophisticated. Then I went to France and discovered Gauloises Papier Mais. Probably even the French have outlawed smoking in this day and age...

Pound a pint when I was a student. About 1.50 in a normal pub.

I could go out with a tenner in my pocket and get completely rat arsed.
