Back to Leicester! But with a Canadian family in tow...

Greeetings all from Beautiful British Columbia in Canada

It’s currently 2.14am and I just discovered this Forum:Group and I thought I’d try my luck

Current situation:

- UK born & bred
- Moved to Canada in 2004 (sponsorship from Canadian wife)
- Now looking to move back to the UK with my family

Details:

- Myself: Duel citizenship, educated in UK
- Wife: Born & Bred Canada, educated Canada
- 3.5 yr old daughter (whose turning 4 this year)
- 2nd baby on the way in July

Back Home:

- Parents still live in the UK, Leicester, and we’d initially be moving in with them in it we figure out if we get our own house, but it was my residence until age 26 when I did live in the UK

What I have learned today was that for my Child:

- she officially would start her Reception Year was this September
- she most likely won’t get into a school this year
- we would have to try our luck for next year, her grade 1

ANY TIPS OR ADVICE WOULD BE JUST AMAZING!!!

Thanks

Welcome to BE.

Please have a quick read of the site rules, beige bar at the top, and should you have any site related problems please contact one of the moderators, names in bold at the bottom right of the forum page.

First thing would be to get your child/children their British Passports, then have a read of the information regarding Spouse visas in the spouse visa section. It seems quite possible that you will NOT get the visa before child 2 is born or before your wife will be unable to fly because of the imminent birth

Hi, and welcome to BE.

Have you already got the visa side of things sorted for your wife? Just that you've not mentioned it.

Your daughter would get in to a school this year if you wanted her to - the council has a legal duty to ensure that every child has a school place, although of course it may not be the school you want. But in Reception it's probably not so important, and she could go on the waiting list for your preferred school.

Best of luck with the move.

:)

It will be a relief for us all to see you have done the visa thing. "Visa ? What's that ?" I hear you say !

How do you intend to fulfill the financial requirements to obtain visa for your wife? That is your first issue.

A number of points for the OP -

1) Your wife can open a British bank account in Canada with HSBC before moving over to Leicester. Please see link below for details -

https://www.hsbc.ca/1/2/!ut/p/c5/04_...5oYoAl2GPWw!!/

2) Your wife can exchange her Canadian driving licence to a GB one without test. Please note that if she pass her driving test in Canada using an automatic transmission car, she will only get an automatic transmission British driving licence.

https://www.gov.uk/exchange-foreign-...britain/canada

3) If you were born in the UK, it is very likely that you are a British Citizen otherwise than by descent. This means that your daughter is a British Citizen by descent. You can apply for her British passport using the link below -

https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports

4) The OP may want to pay voluntary National Insurance contributions as he is overseas for a number of years. Paying voluntary NI contribution means that the OP can get a bigger UK state pension when he retires.

https://www.gov.uk/voluntary-nationa...-contributions

5) Does your wife have a grandparent born in the UK? If so, she can apply for an UK Ancestry visa to live and work in the UK. UK Ancestry visa is easier to get than the spouse visa -

What prompted the move? Having just moved with a 2 year old and a 6 month old I'd recommend waiting a little.

 They just haven't mentioned them, but that doesn't mean they're not well aware of them. But in any event, they haven't even seen the posts yet, they haven't been back to the forum yet - it was only this morning that they posted! Not everybody is as sad as us and permanently stuck to BE.
