Or "In the event that we may have to put down at sea".

WTF is "put down at sea"?

The incident occurred 2miles out at 600 feet. That's less than 1minute to touch down. Not a lot of time to issue a warning!

Far too many armchair experts around.

If the problem occured suddenly at the last minute the crew may not have had time to warn the passengers - and they're all seated and belted at that point anyway.
"Ohh, Nigel, I thought YOU fueled up before we departed."

Why? the fuel seemed to be good for 8000km

The engines didnt stop they just didnt respond to a throttle up request

Fly by wire problem?

Anyone remember that Swissair jet that dropped out of the sky off Nova Scotia a few years ago - wasn't that caused by a similar problem?

They weren't so lucky though, and the resulting investigation and lack of confidence led to the demise of Swissair.

I'll take famous air crashes for 10

Nope, the swissair crash was an on board fire - a very scary event - there hasnt ever been one like this that I can recall.

Fly by wire (as in fly by wire throttle) problem probably yes, a lot goes on between the physical action of moving the throttle and dumping more go juice into the engine.

That was a flight deck fire caused by a retro fit of the 1st class entertainment system.
