I mainly participate on the 'Over 50s Moving Back to UK' forum but saw this thread and thought I'd say hello.

We are in Laleham and love it. We're staying with my mother-in-law at the moment. She's in a very small (9 homes) gated community right on the Thames. She's 5 min. from Staines: the mall, train station, grocery shopping, etc.

I'm waiting to hear back on a job iterview at a big corporation in Weybridge. Weybridge looks pretty nice.

Lol, at this rate we might be flat-mates! I've replied to your thread about Staines as I used to live there and grew up in the area, so I know it pretty well.

Nicky,

I know Egham/Staines well and I think these areas have gone downhill. Even Laleham/Shepperton have too in my opinion.

My mum still lives in Englefield Green which is still nice to live in, but like anywhere has changed. The council estate has got a bit rougher.

We live south of Guildford, near Farnham/Aldershot. I love where I am, live on a rural road with about 15 houses and a field at the front of my home and an orchard behind my garden. Lots of nice country walks for the dog. I'm about half hour from my mum so not too far to drive.

I agree with Triboy, Godalming is a lovely town. I'd also recommend Farnham/Guildford. Chobham/Windlesham are nice places too and fairly quiet areas.

Dont know this area very well at all but went to Farnham a couple of weeks ago and it did seem a very nice little place - dont know how good the transport would be to Staines though. Had one of the best wool shops I have seen in a long time but that generally isnt a reason why anyone would want to move somewhere (except me, perhaps LOL)

I'm in Laleham and like it very much. Am just curious: in what ways do you think Laleham's gone downhill?

Cheers.

I was born in Staines but grew up in Sunninghill. Went to Charters school in Sunningdale and frequented Pantiles in Bagshot. My Mum lives in a Warfield now as does my brother. The main problem is that the house and rent prices are often affected by the good schools in the area.
Prices are a lot higher in the catchment areas of the good schools...and even then you may not get them in.
I like the area a lot, but the traffic and commutes to work I certainly don't miss!

Doesnt everyone worry about things like that? Even better if they have a good stitching shop and a place that does a fabulous eggs benedict!

Oh slightly ahead of me...I'm 37. Yes, it really is a small world. Did you know they shut Pantiles a couple of years ago and built appartments
Where are you now?

I had seen that, as I my Mum and brother still live in the area...I go back every year or so. I live in Victoria, on Vancouver Island in Western Canada....a beautuful part of the world...best thing we ever did!

My Mum was born in a pub in Staines which is now an industrial/office complex...sad.

Ascot is a great place IMO. We had our second home there til I was about 8 - nice and close to London and we had lots of land...

My hubby went to Charters as did his older brother and younger sister. He's now and his sister is 49.
