I'm looking to to move back to Scotland with my children ages 9 and 12. Previously we lived in Ireland and Spain so they have only visited Scotland.
Are there any expats who returned in a similar position to me and how did it go? I'm mostly concerned for my 12 starting a high school where he will not know anyone. Although we are aiming to arrive in the Summer Holidays. It's been a tough decision but I feel we have to make the move. Can anyone help, feeling very anxious!!

Hi
My DD is moving to Scotland from England and she has had to apply for school places in the area they will be living.
Her children have been provisionally accepted into one of the local schools but she will have to confirm her new address to the education authorities before the new school year starts.
She has already pre-registered the kids with the education authorities and has had to supply details including birth certificates followed by proof of address.
Some people have been found to lie about where they will be living to get access to better schools.
In my DD's case they will be moving in one month and her children will go to the new schools at the start of the school year in August.
Her younger child is also moving to a high school.
You need to choose your area and then research appropriate schools.
There are performance tables for the schools which you can check.
You can also check the school start date in either the local authority website or the school website.

You don't seem to be having any responses to your initial query.
You don't say when you left the UK or whether your kids have UK citizenship.
The location you choose will affect many other decisions including schooling.
In areas with good state schools, house prices are higher.
My two GSs will also arrive and not know anyone but they will be the "new kids on the block" and they will have a certain novelty value in coming from England.
Assuming your kids speak (or are familiar with) Spanish then you may want to find a school that teaches Spaninh.
Why don't you perhaps ask more specific questions.

If you know where you will be living, arrange for your son to meet some children in the area over the summer hols who will be going to the same secondary school. You could, for example, get someone to post on the Year 6 parent WhatsApp group for the local primary school, explaining your situation and that you are hoping your son can meet some other children locally. This would definitely work in my area as people are very community minded and are eager to help. Not sure if it would work everywhere though.
