in fairness, I would expect that the first couple of months to be a blast - loads of networking, piss ups and maybe an easy placement handed to you to get you on your feet. Thereafter it gets tricky.

Things are picking up (I know of a couple of a few places hiring) but that will be offset, I would have thought, by the glut of recruiters already here with larger networks.

I'm sure distinctive flair is living well off the basic - just you have to wonder how long the basic runs for before they want results.

I know of someone who was fired last week in a cost cutting measure... I wouldn't mind but they were 100% commission based - only the mobile phone bills were covered!!

I showed this to my DH as i was chuckling at the people skills of our dear recruiter.

As he is in Banking and on a recruitment drive i wondered what he thought. He was as amused by the attitude as i was (and pondered the longevity and a success of a career here). The advice he offered was understand your local market both in terms of actual roles and the deferential character needed to be given the face time.

Can you imagine just working for commission and your mobile phone bill. That's extortion.

My wife worked for one of the major recruiters in Dubai for 3 years in the Admin department and it's amazing to see how they play recruiters when they bring them in.

Usually under 25 , a little bit of recruiting experience or sales background , usually single . Give then a very low salary with 50% of that cast in as benefits and allowances and the rest commission. This helps to keep gratuity to a minimum , if they ever get that far that is.

If you don't bill you end up in deficit and that eats into your already low salary , so in fact you could end up owing money to your employer all depending what you bring in.

50% of the jobs advertised will be dummy jobs and a large proportion of the recruiters are usually sh*te to say the least.
I use only one in the Gulf as you'll find there's multiple firms chasing a small amount of vacancies and even then they still send me below par candidates.

I've had more success in Trade papers and Trade websites to be honest and best of all they're fees and conditions are extortionate.

Not really. I'm 23 on a 20k p/m base with awesome commission, I am in charge of my own specialist area with the best agency in UAE.

Can you imagine just working for commission and your mobile phone bill. That's extortion.

Haha do you actually know anything about this career?

You've placed candidates already??

In fact yes. It doesnt take a good recruiter long to start making placements. A min 35k p/m income is nothing to complain about in my books.

Still no answer about the areas of work you recruit for - just interested as some people we know that have recently been made redundant in the far east are looking for work in the ME region - all with previous ME experience. All have all said how difficult it is so far.

Just one other question... how did you come to become a specialist at the age of 23? How long have you been working?

If it was say 5 years, I could understand it, but that means no degree which isn't possible for residency here.

This site has a unique set of watchers each of whom - including myself of course - have our own set of particular prejudices.
Recruiters are a favourite - they seem to bite back a bitt more than some others & so a great sport.

If I were you I'd just let it go now & good luck - hope you do well.
