I also really object to recruitment agents being tarnished with the same brush as estate agents...
Someone once said to me that the barrier to entry to recruitment is a phone and a pushy personality. Estate agency requires the use of a digital camera too thus raising the bar a lot higher. Further, estate agents don't try and be your best mate when they are trying to screw you.
.Doesn't it seem that every profession gets a shoeing these days? I hate to go against the grain but I know I've worked with some excellent recruiters who were intelligent enough to be able to complete a business deal without shafting anyone or bullshitting. I also know from working in the city for 10 years that in a cabinet full of ****s, investment bankers would be straight out of the top drawer........

Bandwagon jump: As you work in investment banking isn't this a case of glasshouses and stones .

I do actually agree with you. Most in my industry are exactly that - dimwitted, full of bullshite fools that have no idea what they are doing but somehow make a killing along the way. I actually hate most investment bankers and give them as hard a ride as I do recruitment agents.
That said, the term 'investment banking' covers a multitude of sins and for what I do (infrastructure investment) life is a slower pace and the art is thinking things through and getting things 'right'. Hi and welcome, I am actually in Riyadh so cant help with the Dubai stuff but I think "Bahtaboy's" comments were aimed at the profession of recruiters.....
A lot of people on these forums are expat contractor / freelance types and from my experiences over the last twenty years, the recruiter always plays on the "rosie" side of things, never gives all the important but grotty details and the end goal is always commission...... so on par with estate agents...
Before we have an email war, I know all recruiters are not the same, my son is a recruiter in Dubai and has been for the last five years....

Thanks for your positive response Tigger. I was just about to lose hope on the calibre of posters on this forum.
Were coming to Dubai with 12,000 pounds in savings which will go towards our year of rent and polo car.
With the calculations I had done it seemed we would have enough money for living and saving. I mean our combined monthly income will be:
29,000.00 AED = 5,158.57 GBP
Heck, however expensive it is I dont know how I would start to spend 5k every month. To me it seems very comfortable.... considering this is just basic?

Me and my husband have both been offered Senior Recruitment roles out in Dubai.
My package is a basic salary of 17,000 a month and his is 12,000 a month. We have our uncapped commission on top, private healthcare, 30 days off a year and accommodation but only for the first month.
1. Can we survive on this package?
We are a young couple looking to save and enjoy therefore were willing to let go of some luxuries ie a big apartment. We have looked at very large studio's in Business Bay for 45,000 AED a year which seem ideal.
2. Is anybody else working in recruitment in Dubai on here? What is it like?
I am a senior banking recruiter but i'll be working sales and marketing roles in Dubai.
3. What is the best pub to hit on a Friday night?!

rents are constantly falling in Dubai and nowadays a 1bed flat in Tecom goes for between 45-50K, so perhaps you want to upgrade from your studio.
2- I don't work in the recruitment industry, but I have heard from friends that work there that the market is slowly picking up. There are many sales jobs in the market, but marketing jobs are still few...however, this feedback is related to the general market rather than the banking industry.

Not sure if you are still reading - but as someone long term in the recruitment industry - just a few words of advice.
1) The turnover of recruiters out here is very high. Particularly those who rely on commissions to make the job worthwhile. OK to have commission in the offered salary - but you should not rely on this to cover any of your costs.
2) Sales & marketing staff were cut back to extreme levels & while some recruitment may be going on - it's low volume & focused on higher quality hard-to-find staff. The same ones who had their fingers burnt & will never come back.
3) I know of a number of recruiters who are already in the UAE & available & I'm guessing that they are not taking up these positions for good reasons
4) If you do decide to come - don't bring any savings. Live work & play on the money you are able to generate here & go home when the income does not cover these costs. Don't borrow any money or run up credit card bills for the first 6 months at least.
5) Make sure the company gets your visa sorted inside 2 weeks & prior to you starting work. For more info see other posts on this site. Some from partners of people who are in jail for working without visas.
6) Ignore the recruiter comments. If you are going to stay long term in recruitment - you'll get used to them.
