Re: Why are we still here?
Am not there yet but will be this time next week, it is my intention (ah, how often good intentions go awry?) to stay in Dubai for 3 years and then try to get a move to Oz, most likely Perth

Grief, I've just got here!
Is it really as bad as you guys make out, I think it's rather decent!

I first came here in 92 and to say it was different was an underatatement, I remember drinking in the Seamans club in Bur Dubai and also in the TGI Thursdays and Pancho Villa's (we were going to have a dwarf throwing competition)
Also there was of course the legendary highland lodge, but we got banned there for being too rowdy.
Those were the days
in fact, i am now friends (in Glasgow) with the people who used to manage the Highland Lodge in 92

You make of it what you want. You can be negative or positive. Sure, many things are annoying, unfair, or just plain mad, but don't let things get to you & make the most of the good things.
Whilst there is plenty of shallowness, there are good people too.
I hope you have a good time, although I do wonder why some people stay if they hate it so much. Few things annoy me more than people who whinge all the time, but do nothing to change their situation.

Like any place, Dubai has both good points & bad points. I like it.

I agree, Dubai conversation really has changed over the years. When you meet someone knew they no longer brag about their toilets etc but ask where you live and what's your rent and how long does it take to get anywhere! People put their children into the closest school so the my child is at blah blah has even stopped. Well in some cases!
Reminded me of certain Brighton clubs!

I respect them for that also, 5-10 years living in a place you dont really enjoy, to set yourself up for a lifetime?? Not a bad option really
