Anyway, this is outside of my area - and almost everyone posting on this board - get proper tax advice.
i thought that anything that is earned outside uk is not taxable etc

As Meow has chosen not to comment upon this statement I can only surmise that she wants us to use her website instead. My understanding remains that, if I return in July then anything earned during April-May-June (including End of Service benefits) will be taxable. I do concur with an earlier comment that EoS benefit is accrued over a long period of time and should be taxed proportionately, but I doubt that HMRC will agree.

I don't think so: read the HMRC guidance:

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/international/rdr3.pdf

Section 5 page 61 & page 66 etc. The Split Year Treatment is applicable to your case.

Very helpful comment and link, thanks. My only concern is that it does say that I may have to start work full-time in the UK.

"5.30; You may receive split year treatment for a tax year if you start to work full-time in the UK and you meet the third automatic UK test over a period of 365 days. If there is more than one such period then the UK part of the year will run from the beginning of the first such period..."

Certainly not the way I read and understand case 5 (5.30). I understand the applicability of Case 5, 6 , 7 and 8 all relate to deciding the date that the Split year overseas non residence ends and UK residence starts. I certainly don't understand the Split Year rules to mean, (as you have interpreted it), that you have to take a job in UK. But obviously you need confidence from a professional advisor. I use an overseas tax specialist based in Cambridge UK . She is on google.
