When to resign?
I wonder of I could get your opinion on this:
I have been told to wait to resign until my visa is approved for Qatar. The job offer has been signed and documents sent to the new employer. I would rather like a couple of months off before starting work, as I have a lot of things to do to prepare for the move, in the UK and USA.
Do you know if there are any weird Qatari rules that say you must be in full time employment right up until you relocate to Qatar? I know the HR dept say wait until we tell you to resign, but I would rather do it sooner.
What are your thoughts on this?
Cheers!

They are telling you to defer resigning from your current job just in case your visa is not approved. Of course if you want to take the chance then that's up to you.
