Default What car do you drive?

Hi,

I just passed my driving test very recently , so I feel like talking about cars. Just so you know, I haven't moved to UAE yet.

Could someone working there please tell me what it means when a company offers to pay your car bill. Presumably you can't opt to take the cash and buy a banger instead ... ? Probably because they want the money going back into the country?

What sort of cars do you folks drive? Since the cost of petrol isn't such an issue, do you find maintenance cost etc. to be quite high?

Impossible to say what "pay your car bill" means without seeing the full wording.

I'd be very reluctant to use my own money to run a car out here (in Abu Dhabi): you're going to have a shunt sooner or later (quite possibly when you're parked), and aside from the insurance excess there's the hassle of dealing with it. My car's 2 1/2 years old and I've had 6 (I think, maybe more) new tyres in that time--not coz they're worn out, but because a) they've been punctured beyond repair and b) coz they're out of date. The climate is very harsh for tyres, and its one thing I don't compromise on.

Maintenance is also a pain--I have a VW and I don't trust the main dealer to do things properly, nor keep to their quoted time scales. There's enough hassle out here already without adding bleeding car dealers to the list. I guess I'm lucky in having a company car, but I'd hate to have my own money invested in one here.

And if you're going to be doing any appreciable mileage, or will be transporting your family, get something as big and heavy as you can, just in case...

The "free" Prado is one of those lesser spotted perks, the half decent company car.

I used to have a Boxter 2.7. Biggest problem was everyone saying " Couldn't you afford a 911?" Grrrrr!- I swapped it for a (diesel) Merc...how sad is that?

I love the prado bashing on here from the uber expats..ffs its a car you most prob couldn't afford to run back home (as I couldn't)

We toyed with getting a porsche 911 turbo a while back but it would just break my heart watching it getting dented, scratched and generally ****ed up..

That's why we drive Prado's...they are pretty anonymous.

Cars do nothing for me though, I still think its really cool that you start the prado by pushing a button rather than use a key..which i guess says a lot about cars and me..
