Western women working in Dubai
Hi all,
I'm considering a move to Dubai for a couple of years, maybe more. My boyfriend works in construction and is on a flight to Dubai 'as we speak' to spend a few days looking for work. If all goes well for him, then I plan on joining him hopefully before Christmas. However I'm feeling a bit apprehensive, heard mixed things about dubai and how women are treated out there. Is it really that bad, or can you more or less go about your daily life without any hassle (assuming you stick to the 'guidelines'!) ?? And what about work, is there a lot off sexism or are women treated equally in the workplace? I'm considering a couple of avenues of employment and probably won't know for sure till i get out there. Also we aren't married and will be living together - problem? Or if we don't mention we aren't married it, will nothing be said?
Sorry, you've all probably had these kind of questions a milion times before but I just need to put my mind at ease a bit as I have no idea what to expect!! Thanx!!

Your boyfriend is in construction?
If he is a construction 'worker' you will have to get used to living in a room with 99 other men, sharing about twelve toilets and showers between you...... I'm sure they won't mind. He will earn about fifteen pounds a week.
What's that you say? Oh he's managerial??? Oh that's all right then.......... he can let the workers suffer while he enjoys himself.............

Re: Western women working in Dubai
Ah bless her, before i came over my dad, about 10+ years ago worked in the middle east and he told me so many times no dont do it, you can drive, you cant speak, you cant work bla bla bla... of course i did what he told me not too because i am a daughter and when i told him about how it was now he couldnt believe it! He is really looking forward to coming over and seeing the place now...
So if people who were here years ago are the one giving advice then that is where the worry comes from.
Loads of women work, western or not!! Dont judge until you have at least visited, it really is home from home, you will find someone right around the corner that comes from the same place you do!

Plenty of working women in Dubai, both Western and Asians. I work for a large landscape architecture firm, and over half the people in my team are female.
