waitrose

I read that Waitrose is opening in Dubai in 2008... JV with spineeys.

Is it that big of a deal that they are arriving in UAE?

I understand that with spinneys, carrefor & M&S there's already a great selection...

Does harveynics have a food floor as well?

Do I bother bringing any of delia's books or can I access online?

(yes, FOOD & cooking is a big thing for me...)

Spinneys already sell Waitrose products (tinned/frozen/packets).

M&S food department is nothing like ones back in UK so don't get too excited.

unlike the fabulous nigella, lol...

the m&s foodhall is really, really crappy...and the harvey nics one just has massively over priced (even more than the uk) choccies/biscuits/jams and the like. Spinneys is already getting more and more waitrose products in, including fresh ones...

no it isn't is it...?? waitrose is owned by John Lewis and simply has a licensing deal with spinneys, who is owned by Albwardly Investments. But they are going to be rebranding 20 spinneys' stores to Waitrose according to the press...

It seemed to me, from the announcement, that all the Waitrose stores were actually going to be operated by Spinneys... no? It'll be more like a franchising deal than a licencing one, from what I have read. Could be wrong!

Thanks everyone.

Too bad about M&S having a poor food section... just when they were getting their act back in gear in the UK too!

I'll make spinneys first on my list for necessary supplies for the approaching 3 weeks of hotel stay.

I wasn't completely right - Spinneys will also build new stores to be branded as Waitrose...

Depending on what you are looking for Spinney's is suitable for most of your needs. If you're in Dubai it wouldn't hurt to look in the organic store (especially for coffee and tea - everything is overpriced!) and I do recall getting excellent meat from Park and Shop (although this may have changed as it's been a while since I shopped there)

I find Carrefour to be budget orientated and only good for branded produce (their own stuff is pants).

I imagine you can probably download every cookbook by Delia over bittorrent if so inclined!

there are two, one in meadows village and one in town centre. i think they will probably open in one one of the new shopping centres dotted around the never-traffic-congested ranches too.

I have no driver and my manservant can't drive... He does walk to the co-op with a shopping list, which is of limited use as he can't read English. With sufficient beatings he manages to get things half-right.
