Must say some interesting comments and suggestions have been put forward by all, which should be of help to those who are in the same fix as I am.

Rosebud, I think the simple answer is there is no simple answer. You can get opinions, considered and otherwise, and you must make your own decisions. Good luck!

OMG..sorry, but i am laughing my head off. It is true though, you can actually check with the immigration desk but not over the phone. I am checking on something, will come back to you if the response is positive.

Unless a criminal case has been opened, you can leave with debts.

Imagine all those business travellers who fly in and out of Dubai on a daily basis; they all debt free? I think not!
Today, I was told once you have your visa cancelled and your last payment gone into your bank acct. the bank will issue a certificate informing the immigration to stop you from leaving and to hold your passport unless 1- you provide a guarantor or 2-you settle your debt. This way they don't have to go to court to open a case. Again this could be banks' way of scaring you to aviod the lenghty court process.

Could your friend confirm this practise, please.

OK - let me confirm it for you - banks do not "inform" immigration. The only way they can slap a travel ban is after they have filed a police case against you and then inform immigration. A police case can only be filed if you have a bounced cheque (when they bank your "security" cheque) in your account. A criminal case is usually more effective than a long drawn civil case as it puts more pressure on the borrower to settle his/her debts and also prevents skips. The Chief of police is also fed up with banks passing on their problems to the police (apparently a majority of the inmates in jail are due to financial "crimes" - those in default of loan terms)

I just spoke to a friend from personal loan department and he tells me this could be true with some local banks who has put some new measures in place recently. In the case of international banks, like RBS ( ABN ), they just freeze your account and nothing else, he knows of people with similar cases travelling without any hiccups. However if you have defaulted your loan and was un-reachable for the last 3-4 months, then they would have registered a case and put a travel bank in place.

Thanks for your valuable information, it sounds rather odd with present financial crisis that the local banks act differently to the Int ones as they are both chasing the same goal i.e. recovering their money from debtors. I wonder if HSBC falls into the category of the Int banks who are just happy with freezing the customer's account and nothing else (travel ban).

Innocuous, thanks for taking the matter one step further.

To those guys who have given up on the subject, I have to say there are probably a lot of innocent people who are out there and reading your comments and are in the same predicament as I am and want to know if we should stay and face the consequences or jump the ship. Thanks for your comments to date too.

Rosebud, the problem with forums is you never know who to actually believe. If you have a look at some of IndieG's posts, you will see she is our resident 'local bank' specialist, since she actually works for one.

Agreed Indie has great advice, and others on here have had exp with credit card default or non payment of traffic fines, their input is worth listening too aslo, but at the end of the day, knowing how this place works and how the rules change from day to day, I would say you have to make yr own mind up on how u are going to play things.
